iPhone 5 Processor Options Detailed
Topic: Technology 11:32 am EDT, Jun 22, 2011

With another batch of claims emerging in recent days, it’s clear that the iPhone 5 rumour mill is only going to pick up pace in the second half of 2011. One of the biggest questions is: exactly how fast is the iPhone 5 likely to be?

It’s an especially interesting question with the current high-end of Android devices busting out the dual-core chipsets and pushing past the 1GHz clock speed. Will the iPhone 5 be able to keep up?

Up the A5

All signs point to the likelihood that the iPhone 5 will sport the same A5 chip as can be found in the iPad 2. That’s would mean a dual-core 1GHz CPU that can match its Android rivals, and a GPU that can comfortably outperform them.

The dual-core PowerVR SGX543 GPU found in the A5 is a formidable beast, and benchmarks show it to be considerably more capable at pushing complex 3D graphics around than the likes of the Nvidia Tegra 2 found in many high-end Android devices.

Apple’s big on battery life, so it’ll be interesting to see if the iPhone 5′s A5 chip will be underclocked to any degree. This might not be necessary, as the A5 continues and extends the A4 chip’s ability to dynamically alter its clock speed to suit the needs of the app.

Alternatives

Are there any likely alternatives to the A5 chip for the iPhone 5? To put it bluntly: no.

Last month it emerged that the recent iOS 4.3 update contained a big tip-off that the A5 was indeed to be at the heart of the iPhone 5. Buried in the code was a reference to a new device – codenamed N94AP – and its processor, the S5L8940. This is known to be the code for the A5 processor.

It might seem to be a bunch of random numbers, but this is as close to an official confirmation of the iPhone 5′s processor as we’re going to get before release. With the iPhone 5 likely to ship a good four months after major rivals like the dual-core Samsung Galaxy S 2, Apple can scarcely afford to stand still in the smartphone arms race.

The iPhone 5 will come with an A5 processor – dual-core, likely running at up to 1GHz, and with class-leading graphical capabilities.
