Yet some have waved the proverbial white flag of surrender when it comes the iPhone 5 being in the on-deck circle and have instead concocted and entire imaginary iPhone model in their heads. The iPhone 4S, or 4GS, as they’ve dubbed it, will be released at the Worldwide Developers Conference a mere six weeks after the white iPhone 4 arrival and a mere couple of months ahead of the iPhone 5, they claim. Nevermind that the claims are based on nothing. Focus on the fact that the logic is less than zero. Still don’t see it? Let’s work backwards through the logic of it on our way to making it clear that A) the iPhone 5 release date has been pushed back to late summer at the earliest, B) there is no iPhone 4S, and C) there will be no new iOS hardware released at WWDC. Ready? Let’s go. If the iPhone 5 were coming in June, Apple would never have released a white iPhone 4 at the end of April. The point of the added-on white model was to breathe new life into the iPhone 4, which Apple felt it needed to do once it realized the iPhone 5 wouldn’t be arriving until later. So we’ve established that the iPhone 5 release date is coming later than sooner; a reasonable amount of time will need to pass between the white iPhone 4 release and the iPhone 5 release. The fact that the white iPhone 4 arrived when it did also mean that there will be no interstitial iPhone 4S in the mean time. Again, the logic is simple: if Apple were planning an iPhone 4S for WWDC, it would have saved the white model for the 4S instead of pushing it out there for the 4. In other words, there is no iPhone 4S and won’t be. This leaves only one possibility: the next iPhone to arrive will be the iPhone 5, and it’ll be here no sooner than the sheen starts wearing off the white iPhone 4 release. So where did this “iPhone 4S” concept come from? Good question. The iPhone 5 is purported to look similar to the existing iPhone 4, but with the screen merely stretched to the sides. Some gazers may have mistakenly taken this to be some kind of iPhone 4 revamp. The name “iPhone 4S” is a concoction based on Apple’s use of “iPhone 3GS” for a previous revamp model. However that move was made for several reasons. Apple wasn’t ready with a new iPhone model so it launched literally the same design with better specs, and tacked an “S” onto the end of the iPhone 3G moniker. As such, some have assumed that an iPhone 4 revamp would be called iPhone 4GS or simply iPhone 4S. What’s missing from the logic here, however, is that the iPhone 4 is in fact the fourth generation iPhone; the next model will be the fifth. So of course it’ll be called the iPhone 5 accordingly, even if it is merely a minor hardware revision. Also, once the iPhone 5 is released, Apple will take the existing iPhone and bargain-bin it for the sake of keeping a sub-$100 model on the market. Do you really foresee a scenario in which Apple has two iPhone models on the market called iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S? Or course not. This begs the question, again, of where this iPhone 4S freakazoid pipedream came from. Perhaps some who skipped the iPhone 4 have figured out that the iPhone 5 is coming late, and are now attempting to wish their way into getting their hands on an iPhone other than the iPhone 4 in the mean time? Then again, there’s the longstanding (though never substantiated) theory that Apple leaks nonsense like this just to throw the rumor mongers off the real scent. In any case, those waving the white flag on the iPhone 5 arriving next week are smart in doing so. But those expecting some other interstitial iPhone model to surface and briefly replace the iPhone 4 in the mean time are likely smoking something. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.
