Slap Shot role still paying off for Carlson - Friday, 07/11/03
Topic: Miscellaneous 3:13 pm EDT, Jul 11, 2003

] Steve Carlson is probably the most famous hockey player
] to ever come out of Nashville.
]
] Never heard of him? Maybe the name Steve Hanson rings a
] bell. That was the name of the character he portrayed in
] the 1977 film Slap Shot, a movie many hockey fans
] consider cinematic genius, their Citizen Kane.
]
] Carlson played in the minors for the Nashville South
] Stars of the old Central Hockey League during the 1981-82
] season, notching 23 goals and 39 assists. But he gained
] much more notoriety as one of the rowdy, long-haired,
] goofy glasses-wearing Hanson Brothers who played for the
] fictitious Charlestown Chiefs in Slap Shot.

Dissertation Could Be Security Threat
Topic: Current Events 10:21 am EDT, Jul  8, 2003

] "He should turn it in to his professor, get his grade --
] and then they both should burn it," said Richard Clarke,
] who until recently was the White House cyberterrorism
] chief.

And it's your ignorance and inability to face reality that will continue to put our lives in jeopardy, you twit. If this grad student can build such a database, then obviously someone with a lot more motivation could as well. Burying our heads in the sand doesn't help.

Eminem buys ex-Kmart CEO's estate for $4.8 million
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:03 am EDT, Jul  8, 2003

] Marshall Mathers III bought the Floridian traditional
] estate on six acres, replete with heated marble floors
] and Honduras mahogany paneling, for close to $4.8
] million. That's about $1 million less than the original
] asking price, Oakland County land records show. The deal
] closed Feb. 6.

I find it ironic that Em chose to buy the Kmart CEO's home.

I remember when this house was being built. It was the largest home I had ever seen at the time. I couldn't fathom why anyone would need that much space.

Spike Lee's head has just officially gotten stuck in the Holland tunnel.
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:38 am EDT, Jul  8, 2003

Spike Lee sued Viacom over their proposed rebranding of the cable network, TNN, to "Spike TV". I swear, if anybody even so much as thinks about "nox tv", I'm on them like R. Kelly on a school bus.

Secrets of Dungeons and Dreamers
Topic: Games 9:36 am EDT, Jul  8, 2003

] The book profiles people who evolved gaming from paper to
] pixel, through 1970s Dungeons & Dragons roots, to MMORPGs
] (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) like
] EverQuest

I wonder if they'll profile Chuckles.

best quote in the article:
"This isn't just entertainment, it's an artistic medium and a cultural force," Borland said. "History matters, and we want people to realize that Quake isn't an isolated phenomenon. Games back in the 1870s had similar themes, so did mid-century toy soldiers and H.G. Wells novels. When you realize kids have actually been fragging each other for hundreds of years, that puts contemporary game culture in context."
