] Starting the 9.0-liter, 64-valve, naturally aspirated ] all-aluminum V16 engine, the sound is of a brilliantly ] machined instrument, here with 16 silky-smooth throats ] talking. Frankly, 600 horsepower feels conservative and ] wed guess at a 0-to-60-mph time in the five-second ] neighborhood. You can only drive this with a tuxedo on and a bottle of Grey Poupon. What's the big idea? Toward a pedagogy of idea power |

One can take two approaches to renovating School -- or indeed anything else. The problem-solving approach identifies the many problems that afflict individual schools and tries to solve them. A systemic approach requires one to step back from the immediate problems and develop an understanding of how the whole thing works. Educators faced with day-to-day operation of schools are forced by circumstances to rely on problem solving for local fixes. They do not have time for "big ideas." This essay offers a big idea in a reflexive way: the most neglected big idea is the very idea of bigness of ideas. In brief, when ideas go to school they lose their power, thus creating a challenge for those who would improve learning to find ways to re-empower them. This need not be so. What I am suggesting here is a program of idea work for educators. Of course it is harder to think about ideas than to bring a programming language into a classroom. You have to mess with actual ideas. But this is the kind of hard that will make teaching more interesting, just as idea work will do this for learning. ] Traditional concepts of scale economies applied to ] production--the more steel you made, the more cheaply you ] could make each additional ton, because fixed costs can ] be spread. Much of the path-dependence literature is ] concerned with economies of consumption, where a good ] becomes cheaper or more valuable to the consumer as more ] other people also have it; if lots of people have DOS ] computers, then more software will be available for such ] machines, for instance, which makes DOS computers better ] for consumers. This sort of "network externality" is even ] more important when literal networks are involved, as ] with phones or fax machines, where the value of the good ] depends in part on how many other people you can connect ] to. an interesting discussion of market dependancies, false memes, and other nefarious imperfections which seem to dominate us.
