Minding the Planet: Web 3.0 Roundup: Radar Networks, Powerset, Metaweb and Others...

First of all, we at Radar Networks are NOT building a new search engine to compete with Google, like Powerset and TextDigger are doing -- so we're not competing with them. Companies like Powerset and TextDigger are working on natural language search. Natural language search is not equivalent to the Semantic Web, although the Semantic Web can certainly help that process.
Companies working specifically on natural language search are making use of semantics, but at the word-level only. They use networks of words that are linked to synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and other variations. These are sometimes called semantic networks. Based on these networks of word meanings, they can understand the meaning of various words and expressions.
Interesting to see where they are going. Also a good overview of what the Semantic Web is and isn't vis a vis Web 2.0 (already hate that designation, but...)
The Police To Be Vastly Smug Around The World This Year

The Police are merrily going around rubbing other bands' noses in it at the moment. Even though it basically consisted of a 56-year-old man, a 55-year-old man and a 65-year-old man playing a song about a prostitute, The Police's big comeback performance was the highlight of The Grammys, and that's not something you could say about other newly-reformed bands like James or Crowded House.
While I'm wondering if I somehow wrote this article without remembering, I'm very happy that this has happened. Yes, Sting is a pretentious asshole, but being someone who's loved this band since its formation and never got to see them in concert growing up, I'll be able to be one of those tired cliche ridden aging hipsters who's willing to overpay too much for a ticket to relive their youth. YEAH!
"I have a little bit of a pet peeve, more with the Canadian media out west," Trotz said the other day. "They tend to come in and think that we shouldn't be in the league. They did that with Tampa Bay and they did that with Carolina, and all I know is that those two teams won Stanley Cups. … I have dual citizenship, U.S. and Canadian, but my pet peeve more with the Canadian market is they don't want to let go of [hockey]. We have the best game in the world. And we tend to not want to let it go. We always want to go back to the six-team [or] Canadian [arguments], and I'm like, 'Come on, we've got a great game.'
Looks like Trotz is finally starting to speak out about the NHL conspiracy. And yes, the Predators are one of the funnest teams to watch play in addition to being the best in the league.

Friends, my baby is back! Metro Nashville PD called me on January 8th (exactly 30 days) to say that she was in an impound yard. I rushed right over there to see her. She was listed as an abandoned vehicle and towed out of an apartment complex. Apparently someone at the complex called Metro between the 8th and the 18th. The officer who responded simply put an abandoned vehicle sticker on the windshield and called it a day. Didn't run the tags so they didn't know that it was stolen. So then she sat there until Jan 7th when the wrecker picked her up for being abandoned! ARGH!!!!
Overall, she's in really good shape. I can't beleive the theives were dumb enough to just steal my AV system and two of my IPF trail lights! They even left 4 other lights! IDIOTS!!! The interior is a mess as you can see. The only 'mechanical' damage that I could determine was that there was a vacuum leak in the intake manifold (have had the same problem before, probably a hose with a hole in it) and the brakes felt really soft like there was some air in the hoses. She's at the local dealer getting the interior patched up and then back to the electronics store to replace the AV system installation.
Thanks again for everyone who sent me emails and encouragement. I really appreciate everyone trying to help out. Hopefully you'll be seeing me in her on the trail sometime soon!
Pursue broadband access in every part of Tennessee

Unfortunately, Tennessee is not completely wired for the greatest levels of Internet service. And that circumstance should be unacceptable. It's not just about convenience. Broadband should no longer be considered a novelty or a luxury — it should be a given.
There's actually 3 columns in today's Tennessean opinions section talking about this subject. I encourage you to read them all and participate in the forums, regardless of where you're stance is on the subject. I served on the Tennessee Technology task force, which was the parent to the Broadband task force. This was one of the strongest recommendations by the Technology task force - investment in broadband infrastructure.
%22I think, unfortunately, it has a little bit to do with our market,%22 Trotz said. %22When you think of Nashville, hockey is not the first thing that comes to your mind. I know I get frustrated sometimes with the Canadian media that don't give us a lot of respect. They can't understand that there's good hockey teams in Tampa and Nashville and Carolina and places like that. I am Canadian, so it does bother me.
Trotz knows of the 'conspiracy' I speak about, but isn't willing to quite 'go there'.
Strizki runs the 3,000-square-foot house with electricity generated by a 1,000-square-foot roof full of photovoltaic cells on a nearby building, an electrolyzer that uses the solar power to generate hydrogen from water, and a number of hydrogen tanks that store the gas until it is needed by the fuel cell.
I had roughed up a similar system for my house, which I hope to renovate and expand in the next 12 months. In my system, I could generate adequate power even in the winter because TN gets enough sunlight. The big reason why I doubt I'll do it is cost. It would cost an additional $75K and even when amortized, would still be a significant cost driver for operating the home. My alternative system would use a geo-thermal heating and cooling system which can still be ran by solar panels. The rest of the energy consumption would come from utilities, but since HVAC is the highest draw, would cut my utilities by over 2/3, particularly in the summer.
