LotR DVD Easter Eggs
Topic: Arts 12:35 pm EST, Jan 11, 2003

] "If having two discs filled with amazing special features
] wasn't enough, the four-disc Extended Edition of The
] Fellowship of the Ring features two very cool Easter Eggs
] that just add to the awesomeness of the set."

On Disk 1 of the 4-disc set, go to "Scene Selection", then "Council of Elrond," then press the down arrow to get to a special "ring" icon at the bottom of the screen. Select it to get a very funny spoof of the Council scene. :)

CNN.com - Video shows police killing dog - Jan. 9, 2003
Topic: Society 10:44 am EST, Jan 10, 2003

I had to blog this because it is so outrageous and sickening. What alarms me is that googling around revealed that this happens ALL THE TIME. I can't believe that postmen have had this problem solved for decades.

What's more disturbing is the inequity of these situations. If a K9 officer is killed during duty, it is considered IDENTICAL in all respects to a human officer falling. Why is it that these situations are not handled like human fatalities? Shouldn't police be held accountable for shooting a dog just like they are for shooting a person?

The Baby Bells cry foul as the competition intensifies.
Topic: Business 10:19 am EST, Jan 10, 2003

This is an interesting article that accomplishes two things that I thought were impossible: it gives the straight dope on how the Baby Bells are manipulating the field of competition and it praises Michael Powell as a pro-consumer FCC chairman. Amazing.

I'm now wondering if this article isn't flak from the FCC itself.

2002 Social Security Number Index for ROLLs in the USA
Topic: Society 2:37 am EST, Jan 10, 2003

This is a list of all people with the surname ROLL who have vacated this plane of existence and left their social security numbers for us to pillage. I'd like to know where the data for this originated.

Combat Power and Enterprise Competitiveness

If the Spanish Armada had had distributed information for shared awareness, we'd all be speaking Spanish now.

The U.S. military has spent millions of dollars demonstrating that shared situational awareness improves combat effectiveness. If we apply the same ideas to intranets and to corporate use of the Internet, does better distribution of corporate information lead to shared awareness and increased business competitiveness?

Pattern Recognition, by William Gibson
Topic: Arts 2:20 am EST, Jan 10, 2003

Cayce Pollard is a coolhunter, "a 'sensitive' of some kind, a dowser in the world of global marketing," able to recognize trends (i.e., patterns) before anyone else ...

Gibson's usual themes are still intact -- globalism, constant surveillance, paranoia, and pattern recognition -- only with the added presence of real-world elements (pilates, Google, Bibendum, Echelon, Buzz Rickson's). With incredibly evocative prose, Gibson masterfully captures the essence of a specific time and place ...

Gibson fans will not be disappointed.

The book goes on sale February 3, 2003. Man, this is going to be one hell of a year for sci-fi!
