Newsweek: Lost in Translation
Topic: War on Terrorism 4:01 pm EST, Nov 15, 2003

] A shortage of Arabic speakers has plagued the
] entire intelligence community. Though U.S. intelligence
] was using all the best technology -- spy satellites,
] high-tech listening posts and other devices -- to
] listen in on the conversations of possible terrorists,
] far too often it had no idea what they were saying. A
] congressional inquiry after 9/11 found enormous backlogs.
] Millions of hours of talk by suspected
] terrorists -- including 35 percent of all
] Arabic-language national-security wiretaps by the
] FBI -- had gone untranslated and untranscribed. Some of
] the overseas intercepts contained chillingly precise
] warnings. On Sept. 10, 2001, the National Security Agency
] picked up suggestive comments by Qaeda operatives,
] including "Tomorrow is zero hour." The tape of
] the conversation was not translated until after 9/11.

Interesting Newsweek article on the status of our terrorist wiretapping efforts.

Words just can't express the love of a rabbit for a stuffed bunny.

Watching the position changes is when I started laughing too hard to breathe. :)

Eastern European Hackers Using DDOS Attacks to Blackmail Companies
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:48 pm EST, Nov 12, 2003

] Gangs based in Eastern Europe have been found to have
] been launching waves of attacks on corporate networks
 . . .
] The attacks involve gangs commandeering as many as hundreds of
] computers through hacking methods to use without their owners'
] knowledge. A command is then issued to each one simultaneously to
] make a series of bogus requests to the servers of the victim. The
] weight of traffic brings the servers to a halt and legitimate
] requests to carry out transactions cannot be completed.

This ties in to one of my speculations about the origin of some of the recent "let's build a clone-army" worms.

Snopes: True support of the troops (*not* an urban legend)
Topic: Current Events 7:27 pm EST, Nov 10, 2003

] By the afternoon, one plane to Denver had been delayed
] several hours. United personnel kept asking for
] volunteers to give up their seats and take another
] flight. They weren't getting many takers. Finally, a
] United spokeswoman got on the PA and said this, "Folks.
] As you can see, there are a lot of soldiers in the
] waiting area. They only have 14 days of leave and we're
] trying to get them where they need to go without spending
] any more time in an airport then they have to. We sold
] them all tickets, knowing we would oversell the flight.
] If we can, we want to get them all on this flight. We
] want all the soldiers to know that we respect what you're
] doing, we are here for you and we love you."
]
] At that, the entire terminal of cranky, tired,
] travel-weary people, a cross-section of America, broke
] into sustained and heart-felt applause.
]
] And, yes, people lined up to take the later flight and
] all the soldiers went to Denver on that flight.

Not an urban legend. Verified. True. :)

Third teen levels molestation charges at Ed Kramer
Topic: Current Events 2:17 am EST, Oct 26, 2003

] After years of silence, a teenager is accusing the
] founder of a popular sci-fi convention of long-term
] sexual abuse.
]
] The new accusation against DragonCon founder Ed Kramer,
] 41, comes on the eve of his trial on child molestation
] charges involving two other boys.
]
] Kramer is scheduled to go on trial Nov. 3 on felony
] charges of child molestation and aggravated child
] molestation for alleged incidents in 1999 and 2000
] involving the sons of a woman he met on the Internet.
]
] But this week an 18-year-old testified before a grand
] jury panel, claiming four years of sexual abuse by
] Kramer, a family friend, prosecutors said.
]
] "This is information we just developed," said Gwinnett
] Assistant District Attorney Jim Miskell. "We're pleased
] any time a victim of abuse can come forward to tell the
] truth about what happened to them."

Kryptos - The Bird's Eye View
Topic: Cryptography 3:53 pm EDT, Oct 23, 2003

] The Kryptos sculpture was commissioned for the CIA's New
] Headquarters Building in 1988, and dedicated in 1990. A
] common misconception is that it is composed only of the
] one "wavy screen" piece -- in actuality there are several
] pieces, and sculptor Sanborn describes them as being in
] three main sections: Courtyard Plaza (which includes the
] sculpture), Courtyard Lawn, and Entrance.

This is a webpage I've created which displays some aerial views of CIA Headquarters, in order to show the locations of the different Kryptos pieces around the CIA "campus".

The page is also a small knowledge-base of other bits and pieces that have emerged about Kryptos, including information about the related morse code messages, and the mysterious nearby engraved compass, along with links to info about two other compasses that were also created by Sanborn in the DC area. None of which, interestingly enough, seem to point north . . .
