Firefox (Mozilla Corporation/Mozilla Foundation) made $72M last year?! - The Jason Calacanis Weblog
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:44 pm EDT, Apr 14, 2006

UPDATE: I know a lot of folks are coming here from DIGG and other memetrackers. The $72M someone told me at BarCampLA and I have no idea if that is true or not. If you reblog this (or report it) please make sure you make that clear.

The best piece of information I got out of BarCampLA was that Firefox, which is produced by the for-profit Mozilla Corporation, made $72M last year and is on target to have 120 employees this year. I have no idea if this is true (anyone?), but it makes sense. I mean, there have to be 72M people using Firefox out there, and making $1 a year seems low to me! Mark Pincus brought this topic up recently.

The Big Pharaoh is moving up to a bigger pyramid. One of the most interesting (and funny) ME bloggers now has his own domain safely off of splog-ridden blogspot. (Can we give Google a prize for worst-follow-though-on-a-smart-acquisition yet?)

Erik Swan | IT dark matter

My experience managing large IT systems, I know that my hard drives fill up quickly with log files and databases. I know that my networks are flooded with activity. I can roughly measure that there is a huge amount of information in my data-center, but like the “visible” mass of the universe, i can really only see a small fraction of it.

Back to the deal at hands, I can't understand Unilever for wanting to outsource their entire I.T. but, what I really can't understand is why Accenture. I wouldn't trust those guys with the keys of my house to clean it, much less my company strategic assets.

So, it is often reported that since the "bad guys" share technology information (such as exploits, bot access, malware, etc), the "good guys" should ramp up their sharing efforts as well. But companies' unwillingness to share data that might, under the circumstances, be considered sensitive is legendary – and understandable.

Thus, while I was happy to see such projects as Splunk Base which lets users upload their logs that indicate problems (yes, security problems as well) and tag the logs with descriptive tags that enable other Base users to learn from their experience, described via tagged log samples. Just sharing logs is nowhere near as useful as sharing such experiences. Either way, this is a good initiative to watch.

This on-line DVD publishing option just changed the world of self-distribution of videos and documentaries. Put a DVD online at Lulu. They take orders and professionally print, package, and mail the dvd. They automatically calculate royalties and send them to you. Their cut is 20% of royalties, or a minimum of 20 cents per DVD whichever is more.

After setting it up, all you need to do is give your potential buyers a web address and lulu takes care of everything else.

Fox is the first of the four major networks to complete a deal with its affiliates to share revenue from Fox programming on "non-linear" platforms such as the web and iPods.

Telepocalypse by Martin Geddes: IPTV is dead (part 27)
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:20 pm EDT, Apr 14, 2006

You have to ask yourself whether the current TV schedules of non-live, non-interactive programs make the slightest sense. The legacy technologies of broadcast and satellite TV might be plenty to absorb 90% of the demand for this kind of “right here, right now” TV. Expensive IMS-based bandwidth reservation systems look increasing irrelevant to the type of traffic that is actually likely to go over these networks.

I’d hate to be a programme scheduler in a TV broadcaster right now. In all industries, gatekeeping is a minimum-wage job — where it isn’t automated away.

Go Daddy plans initial public offering, sources say - MarketWatch
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:16 pm EDT, Apr 14, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Go Daddy Group Inc., an Internet-domain registration company infamous for its risqu television ads, has hired Lehman Brothers to manage an initial stock offering, according to three people familiar with the firm's plans.

The offering, the timing of which is uncertain, could raise more than $100 million and value the company at several times that amount, according to two of these people, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Elizabeth Driscoll, vice president of public relations at Go Daddy Group, declined to comment, as did a spokeswoman from Lehman.

GoDaddy.com, the company's flagship business, is the world's largest registrar of Internet domain names, with more than 9 million under management, according to the research firm BMO Nesbitt Burns. In 2002, GoDaddy.com managed fewer than 2 million names.

IceRocket, which is partially owned by Mark Cuban, was picked up today by ThinkEquity. That company is a publicly-traded holding company for smallish Internet properties like dating site Cherish.com. At game time, we could not get IceRocket to launch.
