"The fundamental issue is that whoever controls the Fritz chips will acquire a huge amount of power. There are many ways in which this power could be abused, and Intel has refused to answer questions on the governance of the TCPA consortium. " Ross Anderson's TCPA FAQ TCPA / Palladium FAQ |

"People believed that the GPL made it impossible for a company to come along and steal code that was the result of community effort. That may have been the case so long as the processor was open, and anyone could access supervisor mode. But TCPA changes that completely. Once the majority of PCs on the market are TCPA-enabled, the GPL won't work as intended any more. " A more coherent discussion of the threat of processor certs. (I did a talk on this at SummerCon 1997.) People should simply refuse to buy computers that refuse to do what they are told. Worked with DivX... If this fails, then lets organize a collaborative cracking effort... More Ross Anderson on Vile TCPA |

"Reflecting the Internet industry's struggles, the Webby Awards will celebrate this year's best Web sites tonight without the characteristic theatrics of the past. "Everyone has less money this year -- everyone," said Tiffany Shlain, the Webby Awards' founder. The most stark change is the event's location, an auditorium at San Francisco's Legion of Honor, which seats 316. Last year's extravaganza sold out the War Memorial Opera House, capacity 3,100. "While testing for Oracle vulnerabilities, Mark Litchfield discovered a denial of service attack for Apache on Windows. Investigation by the Apache Software Foundation showed that this issue has a wider scope, which on some platforms results in a denial of service vulnerability, while on some other platforms presents a potential a remote exploit vulnerability. "Most likely ... the Internet's role as a site of radical business and technology innovation, and its status as a revolutionary force that disrupts existing social and regulatory regimes, is coming to an end." An extremely pessimistic view of the problems with the ICANN. The thing is that if ICANN becomes bad enough that it makes sense to do away with it, its a simple matter to create and promote an alternative DNS system. It may be hard to make it ubiquitous, but on the other hand, there is nothing they can do to stop you. Salon.com Technology | The end of the revolution |

It is the most romantic story in American cryptology. To keep the Japanese from getting American secrets in World War II, Navajos -- among the original Americans -- spoke over the radio in their native tongue. In a sidebar to the movie review for "Windtalkers", David Kahn, author of the crypto classic _The Codebreakers_, retells the true story of Marine Corps codetalkers in World War II. The first fiber-only Ethernet standard was approved Wednesday, opening the door for a new generation of Ethernet products. The IEEE 802.3 standards group gave the go-ahead to 802.3ae, a version of Ethernet that runs at 10 gigabits per second. Extreme Networks: "We will have a 10gbps module within the next few months." It will cost around $60,000. Stick a fork in it; 10 GigE is done -- but still too hot to eat |
