"The media that Time Warner does is very good at satisfying generic interests but isn't good at satisfying each individual's very unique, specific interests." Take a look at NYTimes.com's online media kit. It currently touts the site's average user visits 4.0 times per month and notes that's better than CNN.com's 3.4 or ABCNews.com's 2.1. Those lousy frequencies are for brand name, traditional media content that changes daily (if not more often). How will those premier brands charge for access when consumers won't regularly visit for free? The answer? They won't. Consumers don't go online for traditional media content." Great article about the difference between online and traditional media... Hits the nail right on the head... AOL Time Warner: It's a New Media, Baby |

"Features include infrared sensors for location and tracking, sophisticated sonar for navigation, directional microphones, motorized wheels, voice-recognition software..." All for $100. This thing actually does some fairly neat stuff. Watch the video... You can do some fairly cool stuff with robotics now... I think the biggest barrier to real useful applications is battery life. 7Gbps AES because they put a lot of memory on the CPU... There was an Intel concept product that attempted to do this for general purpose CPUs, but I think they ran into the usual difficulties with heat. In this application the requirements are different and it makes sense. EE Times - Startup offers gains in multilayer security silicon |

"``With more access, it means there's going to be more creative content out there,'' Plotnick said. But he said that doesn't necessarily mean those creative projects will reach the public, because ``the distribution avenues usually pick less challenging films.''" "Even those in support of Fair Use and similar ideas began to be frustrated with the constant background commentary and ill-conceived outbursts of the New Yorkers for Fair Use and, to my dismay, Richard Stallman, who proved to be as socially awkward as his critics and fans alike report." Hrm... I think the EFF wanted the geeks to be loud and obnoxious. They got kicked off the table, so they are rattling their sabers. "Look, we've got the smartest people in the world and they are pissed off at you and they don't give a fuck about your authority." Its a way of escallating a conflict without actually escallating it. Its a cease and desist letter; a threat. I hope it works out for them. An escallated conflict will leave scars, as such things always do. And I think this particular conflict is escallating quite fast enough on its own, thank you. Sometimes I fear my friends more then my enemies, but maybe only because I know them better. "The managing director of information and communications systems for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be sworn in Monday as the new CIO of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. " Oh, lord! " -- Are you in the Microsoft or Open Source camp?" "I often tell a story to address this point. I grew up on a farm in Utah. Some farmers drove a Ford pick up truck and some a Chevy, and they had a passion about one or the other. In many settings, I have said, "Is this a pickup truck issue?"" "Yahoo has been replacing certain words in messages received by yahoo.com e-mail accounts in an apparent attempt to forestall cross-site scripting attacks." The whack thing about this is the number of sites that show up in google with the mungled versions of the words. Its just downright strange how broad the impact of this has been.
