Thank god someone is looking into this...

"Gregory T. Nojeim, Associate Director and Chief Legislative Counsel of the ACLU's Washington Office, said the new rules fail to recognize the central problems of the investigations before September 11. "Federal law enforcement failed to analyze and act on relevant information," Nojeim said. "The Attorney General's solution to that failure is to gather exponentially more information." "

"Some of these activities will be chilling, there's no question of it," Revell said. "But if the public expects and if the Congress expects there to be prevention of terror activities, there's going to have to be the collection of information, and that collection at times will certainly be problematic to people's concerns."

Porn 'Mousetrapper' Ordered To Pay Back Over $1.8 Mil
Topic: Politics and Law 12:29 pm EDT, May 30, 2002

"John Zuccarini, who usually gives an address in Andalusia, Pa., and who is already one of the Internet's most notorious cybersquatters, was ordered to permanently refrain from diverting or obstructing consumers and to give up $1,897,166 in revenue from the advertising affiliate programs that had paid him for the hits generated by his Web-page mousetraps. "

Zuccarini has been in the center of such cases as Encyclopaedia Britannica's complaint over the misspelled domains Brtanica.com, Bitannica.com, and EncyclopediaBrittanica.com; actress Nicole Kidman's complaint over NicoleKidmanNude.com and the misspelled NicholeKidman.com; Microsoft Corp.'s complaint over EncartaEncyclopedia.com and Encata.com; and United Feature Syndicate's bid for and Dillbert.com. Adkinson Vs. Lessig
Topic: Politics and Law 6:35 pm EDT, May 26, 2002

"From the outset, this thesis is difficult to square with basic facts about the Information Age, particularly with the explosion in access to information made possible by the digital revolution. "

This arguement against Lessig is better then most... Of course, I completely disagree with it, but I'll let you find the flaws...

Topic: Politics and Law 1:23 pm EDT, May 23, 2002

Minnesota has passed a very tough internet privacy law. In general it offers all the right things, but the ISP industry is protesting because they claim its too expensive to deal with different regulations in different states and want a federal law.

Lawmakers seek to purify Web records - Tech News - CNET.com
Topic: Politics and Law 1:17 pm EDT, May 23, 2002

"People who provide false data when registering a domain name on the Web could be thrown into jail for up to five years, if a recently introduced bill becomes law. "

Well, THATS a bad idea... Whois is a relic of the past. Why should you be forced to give up your telephone number to the world simply because you want to register a domain!!

The proper way to investigate a host is to look the IP address up in ARIN's database and then contact the ISP it was assigned to.

"The collapse of Kazaa, however, is not expected to slow trading activity on the company's network, one of the most popular file-sharing sites in the world. Kazaa said it has sold the network to another firm that the music and film industry has not sued yet.

The Web site and the software behind it are now owned by a privately held firm called Sharman Networks, based in Vanuatu, an island in the Pacific. "

Kazza attempts to avoid lawsuits by reorganizing in a data haven.
