In the aftermath of historys biggest and giddiest boom-and-bust, the tech industry is entering the early stages of yet another cycle of innovation. Its a great time to start a new company, says Heidi Roizen of Mobius Venture Capital. Jim Breyer, a partner at VC firm Accel, concurs. This is exactly what was happening in the early 1990s [before the Internet exploded]. Silicon Valley Reboots |

"I saw Star Wars Episode Two: Attack of the Clones hours ago. The how of that will be a thing of mystery buried in a passed piece of paper from my book signing with a hotel, a room number and a time listed upon it. You dont want to know about that room or the person(s) in that room, you want to know about Episode Two. " As this thing is flying around the net I figured I should link it here too... SWII review by someone who has the emotional maturity of a 12 year old. He does a good job of making the film sound interesting, which is likely why he was chosen for this private screening. No mention of N'Sync's roll in the film. :) I have to say I remain skeptical. Ain't It Cool News - View Article |

The Long, Humbling Quest for a Job in Technology |

Three years ago, anyone with a computer science degree and a pulse could practically name his price in the job market as companies scrambled to dodge doomsday Y2K possibilities. That atmosphere was later buoyed by demand from Internet companies, which offered not just high salaries but also stock options, beer bashes on Friday afternoons and a weekly massage. By now, the end of that era has become an almost forgotten cliché. But what might surprise some people is the bleakness of the job outlook for a sector once thought impervious to the downturn: software programmers, with experience in code names like SQL, Unix, Java and C++. Like previous technological upheavals, the IT revolution is likely to yield the greatest benefits not to investors but to workers, in the form of higher real wages, and to consumers, in the form of enhanced product selection, quality, service, and lower prices. No wonder so many of America's investors and chief executives remain anxious about the future, even as economists--not usually known for their optimism--celebrate the economy's remarkable performance. "The Industrial Memetics Institute is an unfathomably vast hierarchical bureaucracy made up of extremely boring people who spend their days in row after row of gray cubicles; sitting at gray desks, typing at gray computer terminals, and thinking gray thoughts. " I updated the Industrial Memetics page... *I* think its pretty funny. Have a look... :) The Industrial Memetics Institute |

"Last month that changed. Before boarding a Toronto-bound plane at St. John's International Airport in Newfoundland, Dr. Mann says, he went through a three-day ordeal in which he was ultimately strip- searched and injured by security personnel. During the incident, he said, $56,800 worth of his $500,000 equipment was lost or damaged beyond repair, including the eyeglasses that serve as his display screen." "DigitalConsumer.org is doing something about it. We are advocating a Consumer Technology Bill of Rights that will positively assert a consumer's rights to fair use. " Hrm... These people mean well, but my experience has been that Congress doesn't care unless you can directly correlate these petitions to votes in a district. I think there is a need for a tool that political activists can use to track voter jurisdiction and correlate it with votes. DigitalConsumer.org Home Page |

"On a 4GB Linux partition, the block size is typically 4K (chosen automatically when the mke2fs utility is run to create a filesystem). Thus one can reliably hide up to 4KB of data per file if using a small file. The data will be invulnerable to disk usage, invisible from the filesystem, and, which is more exciting for some people, undetectable by file integrity checkers using file checksumming algorithms and MAC times. Ext2 floppy (with a block size of 1KB) allows hiding data as well, albeit in smaller chunks." Covert Channel in Linux Filesystem |
