"Amazon is one of the best on-site search capabilities we've ever
seen. But surprisingly, the reason why it works so well is likely to
be the same reason why Search *won't* work well on your site."

"Here in Britain, the United States' staunchest friend, snide remarks and downright animosity greet many Americans these days. It's not just religious radicals and terrorists who resent the United States anymore."

Yesterday's USA-Today cover story catalogs anti-US angst.

The Whacky World of Japaneese Ice-Cream
Topic: Humor 2:11 am EDT, Aug  9, 2002

"Having succeeded globally with cars, electronics and even fashion, it was only natural the Japanese turned their hand to trying to surpass the West with one of its favorite culinary delights - ice cream. "

Somehow I don't think fish ice-cream is going to take off in the states like the walk-man did.

`But Officer, I Didn't Do Anything!': From The Tampa Tribune
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:06 am EDT, Aug  9, 2002

"Off-duty troopers, hired at $30 an hour, picked motorists at random and directed them to pull off the interstate into a rest stop, where Palm Pilot- toting interviewers waited.

No, this roadside checkpoint wasn't looking for drunken drivers. The survey, which will cost about $150,000, was commissioned by the Florida High Speed Rail Authority to gauge public interest in riding a proposed 120 mph bullet train. "

This is downright strange...

RIAA / News / RIAA Announces Intent To Appeal Internet Radio Royalty Rates

"The Librarian's decision was based on a misguided reading of the record. Not only was improper weight given to the testimony of Yahoo! but some 140 separate licensing deals were thrown out by the Librarian. The end result significantly undervalued the music used by Internet radio companies."

Hundreds of stations offline, thousands more on the way, and the RIAA says it wants more.

The C10K problem
Topic: Technology 4:14 am EDT, Aug  8, 2002

"It's time for web servers to handle ten thousand clients simultaneously, don't you think? After all, the web is a big place now.

And computers are big, too. You can buy a 1000MHz machine with 2 gigabytes of RAM and an 1000Mbit/sec Ethernet card for $1500 or so. Let's see - at 20000 clients, that's 500KHz, 100Kbytes, and 50Kbits/sec per client. It shouldn't take any more horsepower than that to take four kilobytes from the disk and send them to the network once a second for each of twenty thousand clients."

DNM mentioned this site to me at Defcon. Its a deep technical look at doing scalable network IO. The ideas apply in lots of different contexts.
