"I don't think the report is true, but these crises work for those who want to make fights between people." Kulam Dastagir, 28, a bird seller in Afghanistan

Do firewalls really give protection?
Topic: Technology 9:51 pm EDT, Aug 26, 2002

"In practical terms, this means encrypting all information that passes over the network and equipping every computer with its own host-based firewall."

This is an anti-recommendation. Besides the obvious observation that Garfinkel's friend's network probably doesn't work too well if his whole company is connected by *hubs,* there is a serious flaw in this logic. If all security is host based, then control is in the hands of each individual employee. This doesn't make sense in a corporation, where policy needs to be in the control of the people who own the network. If policy is in the control of the individual, then this requires an organizational struture where everyone is an independent contractor who is responsible for his own personal business. Despite how attractive this idea might seem, business organization should be designed around what helps people work better, rather then what helps computers work better.

A New Model for AOL May Influence Cable's Future
Topic: Tech Industry 9:20 pm EDT, Aug 26, 2002

"A few years out, the question of whether last week's deal was a good one for AOL Time Warner will probably depend on whether the America Online unit can create the Internet equivalent of must-have offerings like "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City."

Speaking on condition of anonymity, people close to AT&T and Comcast said last week they did not think that America Online could develop sufficient original, proprietary "must have" services to gain that sort of leverage. They say the Internet itself, available to all comers, will be the primary reason why people sign up for cyberspace service — whether America Online's or the house brand.

Of course, America Online is counting on just the opposite. "

An economic pause for 9/11? - Aug. 26, 2002

"A lot of businesses are going to slow," said Morgan Stanley economist Bill Sullivan. "There's going to be lost sales, lost revenues, lost activity."

Downloads Blamed for Low CD Sales
Topic: Politics and Law 8:52 pm EDT, Aug 26, 2002

"I would not argue that downloading and copying are the only factors at work," Geoff Garin, chief executive of Hart Research, said. "But we have clear evidence that downloading and copying do not have a favorable effect on record sales."

Repeat after me, correlation is not causation.

Tech Keeps Tabs on School Kids
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:44 pm EDT, Aug 26, 2002

"Before little Suzy skips out the door swinging her Powerpuff Girls lunchbox, her parents can lock a Wherify GPS-enabled bracelet on her wrist that works like a personal LoJack, pinpointing her exact location as she walks to class. If she's tardy, her parents can jump on the Internet and check her coordinates using aerial or street maps. And if she runs into a strange man asking for help finding a lost kitty, she can press two buttons on the bulky device to dial 911. The bracelet also notifies the cops if someone tries to forcefully remove it. "

The things your television is telling you about the health and wellfare of your children are more important then the things your child is telling you about her need for independence or the things you might tell your child about taking care of herself on the street. This is because children are not people, they are things, and their welfare is more important then their feelings.

Internet privacy loses a voice in D.C. - Tech News - CNET.com

"Yet even Naderites should recognize that Barr's defeat in Georgia's Republican primary last week removes the fiercest champion of privacy in the U.S. House of Representatives, and his electoral loss will be a gain for the surveillance state. "

Yuck... Games being played with Grubb cannot replace the loss of a congressional leader...

Bush's Mideast Sand Trap
Topic: Current Events 1:59 am EDT, Aug 26, 2002

"When the Bush team insists that Saddam Hussein must be ousted to bring democracy to Iraq and the Arab world, but says nothing about democratizing Saudi Arabia or Egypt, people there notice. And it undercuts our support and credibility. "

"An electronic device on board the Pontiac, however, told police exactly how fast the car had been going 124 mph in a 40 mph zone. And it enabled Trotwood to join the growing number of police departments and insurance companies across the country experimenting with data stored on computers, originally designed and installed on cars and trucks to control air bags, to determine what happened in the seconds leading up to accidents."

FYI, your air bag has a flight recorder. No big deal unless they start to use it, but just so you're aware...

Details on NASA EEG project...

"I have been able to infer that the NASA proposal will likely use sensors that are relatively close to the passengers (similar to the wands) only these will be picking up EEG/EMG readings. How the data can be correlated in any way seems far fetched. The following data are the PUBLIC sources of data I have gathered about the NASA project."
