"In a speech given at a storage technology conference in San Francisco, Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro blasted the copyright owners' "scorched earth" legal and policy drives. He also warned policymakers against passing new legislation without serious scrutiny of labels' and movie studios' claims. " Trade group: P2P not illegal nor immoral - Tech News - CNET.com |

"Almost every night in his New Orleans studio, Reznor leaves his work on the upcoming Nine Inch Nails album (which he cheekily refers to as "More Songs About Oppression and Slavery") for the Nazi shoot-'em-up game Return to Castle Wolfenstein. For the 36-year-old, games and gadgetry aren't just diversions; they're a vital means of artistic exploration. " Reznors relationship with machines... "The key was XML tags, data-field identifiers that are communicable across platforms. The private vendors coded their software to define the name, address and other identifying information into distinct fields so that e-mail can be sent directly into correspondence software. Even the sorting could be done electronically - staff assistants direct an incoming message directly to the LC handling that issue, all electronically. " IDing districts in Congressional Email |

Iraq has agreed to allow weapons inspectors. Western Hawks claim this is a stalling tactic. If it is, it will work... CNN.com - Inspectors ready to go back to Iraq - September 17, 2002 |

Unmask is a python script that allows you to break the anonymity of e-mail or other text. It works by doing basic statistical matching against stored "signatures." It may require some tweaking to fit your particular use to it (un-anonymizing IRC chats, email, web pages on FreeNet, etc). Another fun parlor game use is using it to distinguish between two groups of any kind. Male/Female, Engineers/Computer Scientists, Scientists/Liberal Arts Majors, etc. If you improve it in some way, please send me (dave@immunitysec.com) a note. Unmask is released under the GNU GPL v2.0. Unmask |

I post this for one reason only. Instead of calling this product a digital rights server, Slashdot is calling it a "digital restrictions server." This is smart. The media industry has made a lot of headway in the jargon space, words like "intellectual property" and "piracy" are extremely misleading, but in common use. Refering to DRM as "digital restrictions management" could help counter act this. Jargon Watch: Digital Restrictions Management |

"In interviews yesterday, U.N. officials and other experts in foreign affairs suggested that by heeding the global cry against a unilateral U.S. invasion, Bush had skillfully maneuvered the world governing body into a position where it had little choice but to sharply increase pressure on the Iraqi dictator. If the U.N. did not act, the experts said, it would appear incapable of enforcing the Gulf War resolutions it passed to control Saddam -- and which Saddam has flouted in recent years.
