"The Dow broke to its lowest level since October 1998 Tuesday -- and with it went investor hopes that they'd seen the worst. " I wonder if investor experience and new information systems have replaced the panic crashing of previous decades with this slow rolling plumet. Eitherway, your farmer's almanac should tell you that rain is most likely in September. It should also tell you that October is a good month for the black plague. Oh, BTW, the stock market is crashing.... |

Javawalk: Coffee Centric walking tour of SF |

"Javawalk is a two-hour walk in the city center. We start at Union Square and wind through Chinatown, Jackson Square and North Beach, the city's Italian district. While we cover the city's coffee roots (much more significant than Seattle's!) and coffeehouse culture (think beatnik), we also spend some time on San Francisco's history, interesting and arcane trivia and stories the Javagirl has collected from many years of living in the city. Truly, some things could only happen in SF! Javawalk also makes a couple of stops at North Beach cafes for a quick java jolt. Since cool weather prevails here, we need coffee year-round in the city by the Bay. Lucky us!" Javawalk: Coffee Centric walking tour of SF |

Ultimately, science comes down to the individual mind grappling with something mysterious. Physics World magazine recently asked physicists to nominate the most beautiful experiment of all time. The 10 winners were largely solo performances, involving at most a few assistants. What they have in common is that they epitomize the elusive quality scientists call beauty. This is beauty in the classical sense; confusion and ambiguity are momentarily swept aside, and something new about nature becomes clear. Here They Are, Science's 10 Most Beautiful Experiments |

I wish I had the reply function working. In response of Dol's story I must point out: The "independent media center" supports violent "black bloc" factions who believe they are helping the working class by throwing molotov cocktails at police officers and torching small business. They have also published a great deal of commentary in strong support of the political positions presented on the now defunct "stopamerica.org" which was operated by a Seattle Al'Quaeda member who was recently indicted and which referred to the 911 hijackers as "heros." Take everything they say and do with a truck load of salt. These people are the absolute worst of the radical left. However, the building of infrastructure in the third world is a useful cause, and the general point of the article is taken regardless of how questionable the people involved are in general.
