Dan Gillmore on the changing nature of journalism
Topic: Society 4:20 pm EST, Jan 10, 2003

] "Something that many journalists have yet to discover: in
] an emerging era of multidirectional, digital
] communications, the audience can be an integral part of
] the process. Journalism is evolving away from its lecture
] mode — here’s the news, and you buy it or you don’t — to
] include a conversation."

MemeBox 2.0
Topic: MemeStreams 8:24 pm EST, Jan  9, 2003

The MemeBox has been significantly improved. It is now organized like an email inbox, which should make it a lot easier to manage lots of memes. The "P" stands for private. It means that the message in question was sent to you in private (ie, not posted to a thread or memestream).

I am using frames for this, and this is a "correct" use of frames. However, I'm not sure how well this is going to play with various browsers, so please let me know if you have any trouble.

] "First came the fuss over double compensation for the
] radio-commercial actors. Then the flap over royalties for
] recording artists. Now the slap-happy Internet radio
] business is reeling from another hit, this time from the
] nation's most popular network of online stations."

DMCA royalties kill Clear Channel. Never thought you'd hear that one, did you?

] Yeah, there are legal problems. Yeah, it's hard to figure
] out how people are gonna make money doing it. Yeah, there
] is a lot of social upheaval and a serious threat to
] innovation, freedom, business, and whatnot. It's your basic
] end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it scenario, and as a science
] fiction writer, end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it scenaria are
] my stock-in-trade.

Is scenaria a word? Anyway, Cory Doctorow's new novel is available today, and for FREE on the Internet. Download here.

ITworld.com - Xbox encryption key hackers revive effort
Topic: Computer Security 1:07 pm EST, Jan  9, 2003

] "The Neo Project, a group of distributed computing
] enthusiasts, on Wednesday said on its Web site that it
] had resumed its attempt to crack an encryption key used
] to digitally sign software for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox
] video game console."

So, this is the first example of someone cracking a real key via distributed means. Of course, Microsoft could easily shut this down, but that may prompt moves to develop distributed cracking systems that are themselves secure from attack.

Better than any economic stimulus plan Bush has put forth
Topic: Business 9:34 pm EST, Jan  8, 2003

This summer, millions of businesspeople will be upgraded against their will. And no, we don't mean their flight plans.

Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT)will officially end technical support for Windows 98 and Windows NT 4 on June 30. The financial implications for Microsoft and others could be significant, even in the short term.

] "Telcos gain billions in service fees from [...] services
] like Call Forwarding and Call Waiting [...]. Hence, capex
] programs that shift a telco, say, from TDM to IP, as in a
] softswitch approach that might have less capital
] intensity, must absolutely preserve the revenue stream."

Essay on the impact that digital networks have on RBOC revenue streams.

GeoURL ICBM Address Server

] "GeoURL is a location-to-URL reverse directory. This will
] allow you to find URLs by their proximity to a given
] location. Find your neighbor's blog, perhaps, or the web
] page of the restaurants near you."

A few of you will recall me talking about this sort of service in 1996/1997... This site is slashdoted to hell, but I think that ultimately this sort of thing will be extremely important. Espeically with respect to mobile devices. You will want to be able to attach a blog entry to a geographic location, and the reputation system will find blog entries of interest to you as you walk around town... This will allow you to share information about businesses in the area, history, etc...
