"I don't think the report is true, but these crises work for those who want to make fights between people." Kulam Dastagir, 28, a bird seller in Afghanistan

MemeStreams has RSS support!
Topic: MemeStreams 1:07 pm EST, Feb 27, 2003

This is extremely belated. You may have noticed the orange XML icons in the lower right corner of some of the MemeStreams pages. We've added RSS support. This means you can view MemeStreams using RSS aggregators and headline scrollers (AmphetaDesk, NewsMonster, Faust's Friend). The topic pages and user weblogs are supported. The XML icons link to the RSS output. However, you can reach it by adding "?type=rss" to the end of a MemeStreams URL.

Rattle did this feature in some sort of insane 24 hour coding binge. He deserves props.

You can now submit your MemeStreams page to weblog aggregators like Blogdex and Daypop. We'll be turning the main page in to these services this weekend.

OpenP2P.com: Swarm Intelligence: An Interview with Eric Bonabeau [Feb. 21, 2003]
Topic: Society 9:45 pm EST, Feb 26, 2003

] My experience trying to "sell" the concepts of swarm
] intelligence to the commercial world is that managers
] would rather live with a problem they can't solve than
] with a solution they don't fully understand or control.
] So the mindset is a big barrier to adoption.

A lot of whats going on these days in computing is related to these ideas. Of course, the difference between Ant and People is that an Ant will tell the colony if it finds food, whereas People will secure the "food" and charge access. The difference is that Ants don't compete with eachother for resources. They don't have to. Their resources are infinite. This, of course, is the reason these questions are so interesting in terms of information. Information isn't scarce.

Jonas Salling Shareware - Sony Ericsson Clicker
Topic: Macintosh 8:39 pm EST, Feb 26, 2003

If you don't have one of the compatible Sony Ericsson phones (and a Bluetooth-enabled mac) you'll want to get one! Here are some ideas on what you may want to do with Sony Ericsson Clicker:

Control PowerPoint or Keynote when giving presentations.
Control DVD Player or iTunes from your sofa or bed.
Use AppleScript to control anything you like!

Further, Sony Ericsson Clicker has a built in "proximity sensor", allowing you to trigger actions when you leave or come back to your Mac. Again, here are some ideas

Pause iTunes when you leave the room, turn it on when you come back.
Use AppleScript to let your presence (or absence) control anything you like!

I don't think that audio blogging is going to take over. Its not a better interface. Its not easy to edit, and its a pain for the poster because you have to download an mp3. Furthermore, it eliminates the ability to scan content and see if you want to read it in detail. This is really important on the web. I think that people, when faced with an uncommented audio recording on someone's blog, are unlikely to click on it. I think camera phones are a much bigger deal because the web is a visual medium. There is a lot of audio blogging right now because its the neato new hip thing, but I think a lot of it will go away. This stuff isn't going to stick until you've got video. Streaming video from your cellphone is going to require much more bandwidth. We're a moore's law cycle away at least.
