] A light, rare earthquake measuring magnitude 4.9 shook
] the South in the early morning hours, waking up people

| The Dixie Chicks have taken a big hit lately for

| them to be banished wholesale from radio stations, and
| even entire radio networks, for speaking out is

This is a fairly extreme example, but Atlanta has really taken to "new urbanism." The idea is that in typical suburban "zoning" you work, live, shop, and go to school in different places, and the result is that you interact with different people in each place. Therefore you tend not to care about them. By doing all of these things in the same place you form stronger bonds with the other people in your community.

Death of the middle class
Topic: Economics 6:15 pm EDT, Apr 18, 2003

] But today Galton's beautiful form might not be so

] considered normal, a surprising number of economic and
] social phenomena now seem to follow a different arc.
] Instead of being high in the center and low on the sides,
