skullaria wrote: ] Many agree- school sucks. So, what do you guys think about home schooling... When I think of it, I think of reclusive people like the family in the Virgin Suicides and I think of slightly crazy fundamentalists of various variety. It seems like its something that would be impossible to do on two incomes, and it seems like its becoming more and more difficult for people to live the American Dream on one income, particularly in places like California or New York. Additionally, I find it hard to imagine teaching advanced subjects effectively. Do I recall all the details of high school level chemistry? I can do calculus, but can I teach it? Can most "home school" parents do calculus? Can I provide social outlets for my kids that are better then the admittedly bad one in public schools? Just not something I've ever taken seriously. I was somewhat surprised by the tone taken by this site. Seemed more intelligent and less ideological then I expected. What do you think? RE: Nobel Prize winners hate school |

[ I imagine the rabid right and the rabid left will be equally dismissive of this work, but the rest can, at least, find room for sensible debate. -k ] I feel sure that Barnett has been discussed on this site in the past. In any event, my thoughts on this essay echo K's comment. Its somewhat relaxing to read someone who appears to be unconcerned with sacred cows of the present political spectrum. Thomas P.M. "The most blatant tyranny is the one which asks the most blatant questions. All questioning is a forcible intrusion. The questioner knows what there is to find, but he wants actually to touch it and bring it to light." Across the post-industrial West, elections have become eerily manipulated events indistinguishable from corporate advertising campaigns, in which candidates regularly make pronouncements that are obviously insincere or flat-out false but vital to placating millions of voters on hot-button emotional issues. The world loves the untrue statement, and the sliest, most successful politicians deeply internalize this fact. But few politicians are consistently sly in reading accurately the crowd's daily and hourly shifts in passion, and those who are -- because of the fact of their slyness -- usually find it wiser to cave in to these shifts than to lead the crowd down the hard road elsewhere. Because even our best politicians are cowed by the electoral herd, we must look to another group for the true source of power in our age. Robert D. Kaplan rocks. In this piece, he channels the Nobel laureate Elias Canetti, with McLuhanesque results. The Media and Medievalism |
