] I'm worried about my country. I love America. I think ] it's the best country in the world. But I also think ] we're not tending to our sauce. If we ] don't change course now and buckle down in a flat world, ] the kind of competition our kids will face will be ] intense and the social implications of not repairing ] things will be enormous. Much Controversy Over Google's Accelerator |

] Try using Web Accelerator on a forum site, one with lots ] of geeks who love Google and probably already have Web ] Accelerator installed. Why, if you're lucky, you'll be ] logged in as someone else, as the folks at ] SomethingAwful.com discovered. The posters in that forum ] discovered that most of the times they refreshed the ] page, they were logged in as a different person, seeing ] their friend's control panel for the forums. Sweet! Morons. The problem with SiteFinder was that Verisign took advantage of their central position on the internet to make a change to it which benefitted them, but that change forced everyone else to make changes to accomidate them. They helped themselves and hurt everyone else. Google Accelerator is similar. Its more useful then Sitefinder, and Google has less "lock in" as a central net figure then Verisign, but unless this thing dies a firey death in the next few days every webmaster in the world who runs something more complex then a personal homepage is going to have to make changes to accomidate it. Google Web Accelerator: Hey, not so fast - an alert for web app designers - Signal vs. Noise (by 37signals) |

] The accelerator scours a page and prefetches the content ] behind each link. This gives the illusion of pages ] loading faster (since they've already been ] pre-loaded behind the scenes). Here's the problem: ] Google is essentially clicking every link on the page ] including links like "delete this" or "cancel that." What a mess. Is anyone on MemeStreams actually using this thing? Maybe you don't mind if Google now has ALL of your internet traffic logged forever, but you probably ought to mind if it goes through and cleans out your MemeStreams or webmail account. I cannot imagine that this thing is THAT much faster. Lauren Weinstein put it eloquently: Google is smiling their way into becoming -- probably more through a bizarre combination of hubris and naivete than purposeful intentions -- a one-stop surveillance "shopping center" for every lawyer, police agency, district attorney, government agency, and so on who wants to know what people are doing on the Internet. Of course, Lauren Weinstein is one of those people who thinks you should be forced to make your home phone number a matter of public record in order to have a domain name. You can't win...
