"'We do not get that large a percentage of our oil from the Middle East... And one of the reasons that we are sort of assuming this role of policeman of the Middle East has more to do with making Japan and some other countries feel that their oil flow is assured... so that they don't then feel more need to create a great power, armed forces, and security doctrine, and you don't start getting a lot of great powers with conflicting interests sending their militaries all over the world.'" This perspective offers a rational explanation for things like "North Korea" that have had me scratching my head. I'd like to see a counter point, but I think this might be somewhat close to the truth. IP: With a friend like this... |

"RINGGOLD, Ga., March 14 A major freeway in northwest Georgia was closed Thursday following a chain-reaction accident in heavy fog that left at least 120 vehicles scattered around the roadway like discarded toys. The chaos at the crash scene on Interstate 75 near the Tennessee border led authorities to adjust the casualty toll several times in the initial hours, but by midday they were reporting that four people were dead and 39 others injured in the horrific crash." Well, I guess I'm not going to Atlanta tommorow. :) At least 4 die in huge Georgia pileup |

"PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A federal judge threw out the death sentence of Mumia Abu-Jamal on Tuesday, ruling that the former journalist and Black Panther is entitled to a new sentencing hearing for killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1981. " I refuse to have an "opinion" on Abu-Jamal's guilt, but he certainly is a compelling writer. CNN.com - Federal judge orders new sentencing for Abu-Jamal - December 18, 2001 |
