] "There are far too many smart, educated, talented people ] operating at quarter speed, unsure of their place in the ] world, contributing far too little to the productive ] engine of modern civilization. There are far too many ] people who look like they have their act together but ] have yet to make an impact." This is easily the most amazing essay that Fast Company has ever published. This update involves three changes: 1. When you hit a blogid that does not exist you get an error message. 2. When you click on a link it no longer opens a new window. I know that there are many of you who really liked the way this worked. I'm basically bowing to Nielsen's greater wisdom on this. I will make this configurable later. 3. The thread display trys to eliminate redundant posts. Happy New Year! |

Soundmosaic constructs an approximation of one sound out of small pieces of other sounds. The soundmosaic algorithm is: Split the target file up into equal-sized segments, or "tiles". For each tile in the target file, find the closest match in the source files, and replace the target tile with the tile from the source files. soundmosaic |

] "Taiwan's situation differs from that of Hong Kong in ] precisely this manner -- that if the government is seen ] by the people of Taiwan to be using its powers in a ] heavy-handed manner, those people have the right to boot ] that government out of office. The people of Hong Kong do ] not have that right. Taiwan's government is answerable to ] the people of Taiwan. Hong Kong's government is ] answerable to fewer than a dozen men in Beijing. And ] that's it, really... All you have to know is that the ] Taiwan legislation is made within a political system ] where the governed can, if they wish, force change upon ] those who govern them. The Hong Kong legislation isn't." Hong Kong is about to pass a law that would make certain forms of peaceful protest serious crimes (life inprisonment) and that would make it illegal to associate with forgieners for political reasons. There are many articles out there on this; I pick this article because of the many paradoxes it represents. 16,000 people marching in support of restrictions to their right to march for things. The fact that this represents a democratic discourse in an un-democratic land. A democratic land in which a democratic government creates similar restrictions, arguing that its ok because they are a democracy. The fact that I agree, and feel like its ok for Taipei the prevent financial influence from China, but its not ok for Hong Kong to prevent intellectual influence from me. These folks are linking me right now. I read this site every day, and I often recommend articles from it. However, I have never bothered to link it directly. This is one of the best web logs on the internet. Much cooler then Slashdot. I highly recommend it. Its an outcropping from a strange Austin cyberpunk zine that was around in the early 90's. A good source of art, technology, and futurism. Boing Boing :: A Directory of Wonderful Things |

The search engine should now provide more accurate results. When you do an "OR" search it will rank the results that you would have gotten for an "AND" search above those for an "OR" search. |
