] Weiss says the RIAA wanted to send a deterrent message
] others who had similar services up on their college
] campuses. "Nobody is above the law," she said. "And that
] is the important thing to remember here."

If these search engines are really search engines and not simply used for piracy then the RIAA, apparently, is above the law.

Messages sent:
1. In the United States of America you get exactly as much justice as you can afford.

2. The financial details of a court settlement are more important then the moral details.

3. The RIAA will get you even if what you are doing is only tangentally related to their interests.

] And our receptionist? She'd still be paying about 30
] percent, which means she would be contributing about 10
] times the proportion of her income that I would to such
] government pursuits as fighting terrorism, waging wars

Topic: Miscellaneous 6:37 pm EDT, May 18, 2003

] You no longer expect your grandchildren to live the same
] lives that you did, and your lives are very different
] from your parents lives. Today theres an axiom that the
] only constant is change. But what people dont recognize
] is that the world itself has changed because the greater
] change is accelerating. So our whole concept of what it
] means to be human is going to be changing, and it is
] going to be merging with our technology.

In these slow times a reminder of the sort of thinking that drove the technology community 10 years ago is work having. This is a sort interview with Ray Kurzweil.
