IN JULY OF 1999, I began investigating a local Minneapolis Think Tank called the "Center of The American Experiment." Intuitively I had sensed very close connections between the Center, a 501(c)(3) charity, and the Republican Party of Minnesota, which set me out to find what actually was happening there. To make a long story short, what I discovered was an interconnected web of conservative organizations spanning the gamut from academia to law to publishing to politics, all being funded and coordinated by a relatively small but wealthy group of philanthropies, chief among them the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Though the Center has only received about $241,000 directly from the philanthropies, nearly every one of its speakers and presenters is in some way connected to or funded by this movement. To experience the mental state of flow is to create ecstasy over actions, said Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, of Claremont Graduate University who spoke to an audience of 100 in Herter Hall yesterday afternoon Csikszentmihalyi said he and his students conducted interviews of musicians, composers, writers, poets, and figure skaters to determine aspects of flow. Csikszentmihalyi described the seven aspects to how it feels to be in flow: Being completely involved in what you are doing - focused, concentrated; a sense of ecstasy-of being outside everyday reality; great inner clarity - knowing what needs to be done, and how well we are doing; knowing that the activity is doable - that our skills are adequate to the task; a sense of serenity - no worries about oneself, and a feeling of growing beyond the boundaries of the ego; timelessness - thoroughly focused on the present, hours seem to pass by in minutes; intrinsic motivation - whatever produces flow becomes its own reward. "The goal has to come from the inside, and nobody can tell you whether it was the right goal," Csikszentmihalyi said. October 25, 2002 -- About one in three homeless families refuses offers of public housing - sometimes because the rooms are too small or the neighborhood isn't up to snuff, city officials revealed yesterday. Since July, about 178 families living in shelters said "no thanks" to apartments offered in the Housing Authority, while 542 apartments were accepted - a 33 percent rejection rate. Forty-three families rejected at least two apartments. "Sometimes, there is an objection to the size of the apartment. Sometimes, folks do not want to be in the neighborhoods," said Linda Gibbs, commissioner of the Department of Homeless Services. NYPOST.COM Regional News: 33% OF HOMELESS SNUB CITY HOUSING |

So you wake up one day and realize your taste in music sucks. And obviously, that means you suck as well. You're tired, frustrated, hopelessly unhip, and you're very sick of your Winamp playlist. But wait...... before you pull that trigger, consider this. You need hip hop and you need it fast. For your sake, I've set up a "How to be a backpacker" kit that's so easy, virtually anybody can do it. Don't worry. You'll be in touch with the little b-boy inside of you in no time. After this kit, you'll be keeping it so real that only other backpackers will understand a word you spit. So what are we waiting for? Let's begin. How To Be a Backpacker |

Petri Gerdt's name was circulating on the Net well before police released it to the media By Kari A. Hintikka and Ossi Leander The after-shocks of the bombing at a Vantaa shopping mall on Friday 11th October have rocked the Internet, with calls for closer surveillance of message boards and counter- claims that the Net itself is not to blame, and in any event it is largely unpoliceable. Less has been written about the way in which Internet-users carried out their own detective work in the hours and minutes following the fatal explosion. Message board members and chatroom users on IRC (Internet Relay Chat - see attached article for an explanation), operating under online aliases, put together crumbs of information and arrived at the name of the culprit well before either the police or the media was in a position to go public. This is the story of how it happened. HS Home 22.10.2002 - Myyrmanni: Net detectives found the bomber by themselves |

Indeed, if all new cars and light trucks adopted available and emerging gas- saving technologies, the average fuel economy of U.S. cars would surge to 46 mpg, up from todays 27 mpg. And SUVs could average 40 mpg, up from todays 21 mpg, according to a recent study prepared in part by John DeCicco, a senior fellow at Environmental Defense, a New York Citybased environmental group. This page contains links to websites dealing with Rwanda's civil wars, all of which involve the ongoing ethnic conflict between the majority Hutu and the minority Tutsi. The bloody warfare between these two groups spilled over into the neighboring Congo in 1998 and helped ignite the regional war centered in that country. The History Guy: The Civil Wars of Rwanda |
