IN JULY OF 1999, I began investigating a local Minneapolis Think Tank called the "Center of The American Experiment." Intuitively I had sensed very close connections between the Center, a 501(c)(3) charity, and the Republican Party of Minnesota, which set me out to find what actually was happening there. To make a long story short, what I discovered was an interconnected web of conservative organizations spanning the gamut from academia to law to publishing to politics, all being funded and coordinated by a relatively small but wealthy group of philanthropies, chief among them the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Though the Center has only received about $241,000 directly from the philanthropies, nearly every one of its speakers and presenters is in some way connected to or funded by this movement. October 25, 2002 -- About one in three homeless families refuses offers of public housing - sometimes because the rooms are too small or the neighborhood isn't up to snuff, city officials revealed yesterday. Since July, about 178 families living in shelters said "no thanks" to apartments offered in the Housing Authority, while 542 apartments were accepted - a 33 percent rejection rate. Forty-three families rejected at least two apartments. "Sometimes, there is an objection to the size of the apartment. Sometimes, folks do not want to be in the neighborhoods," said Linda Gibbs, commissioner of the Department of Homeless Services. NYPOST.COM Regional News: 33% OF HOMELESS SNUB CITY HOUSING |

Petri Gerdt's name was circulating on the Net well before police released it to the media By Kari A. Hintikka and Ossi Leander The after-shocks of the bombing at a Vantaa shopping mall on Friday 11th October have rocked the Internet, with calls for closer surveillance of message boards and counter- claims that the Net itself is not to blame, and in any event it is largely unpoliceable. Less has been written about the way in which Internet-users carried out their own detective work in the hours and minutes following the fatal explosion. Message board members and chatroom users on IRC (Internet Relay Chat - see attached article for an explanation), operating under online aliases, put together crumbs of information and arrived at the name of the culprit well before either the police or the media was in a position to go public. This is the story of how it happened. HS Home 22.10.2002 - Myyrmanni: Net detectives found the bomber by themselves |

This page contains links to websites dealing with Rwanda's civil wars, all of which involve the ongoing ethnic conflict between the majority Hutu and the minority Tutsi. The bloody warfare between these two groups spilled over into the neighboring Congo in 1998 and helped ignite the regional war centered in that country. The History Guy: The Civil Wars of Rwanda |

Paul Sanchez, the public drunk who had been picked up a dizzying 124 times in San Francisco the last time we counted, is back in jail again -- having clocked up another four arrests for some form of public drunkenness. Sanchez now resides in the medical wing of the County Jail, doing a 130- day stretch for resisting arrest after throwing an empty vodka bottle at a cop. The cop had revived him while Sanchez lay passed out in a doorway near Castro and Market. Sanchez is a legend among the city's beat cops and paramedics -- and he's become Exhibit A for the growing problems caused by the city's street people. 128th time: Angry drunk in tank, again / Chronic drinker soaks up police, hospital resources |

NEW ORLEANS, La. (Reuters) - A day after completing the longest swim in history, Martin Strel says he needs a rest, a massage and a date. After 68 days of swimming 12 hours a day to travel the 2,400- mile length of the Mississippi River from its source in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to where it empties out into Gulf of Mexico, Strel says he is a tired man . "I am more tired today than yesterday," the 47-year-old Slovenian said sluggishly. "I need a massage. I need a good woman. I didn't touch woman in three months. Not good for me," he told Reuters in a phone interview. Slovenian Needs Rest, Love After Swim |
