How To Be a Backpacker
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:48 am EDT, Oct 25, 2002

So you wake up one day and realize your taste in music sucks. And obviously, that means you suck as well. You're tired, frustrated, hopelessly unhip, and you're very sick of your Winamp playlist. But wait...... before you pull that trigger, consider this.

You need hip hop and you need it fast.

For your sake, I've set up a "How to be a backpacker" kit that's so easy, virtually anybody can do it. Don't worry. You'll be in touch with the little b-boy inside of you in no time. After this kit, you'll be keeping it so real that only other backpackers will understand a word you spit. So what are we waiting for? Let's begin.

Technology Review - Why Not a 40-MPG SUV?
Topic: Miscellaneous 7:41 pm EDT, Oct 23, 2002

Indeed, if all new cars and light trucks adopted available and emerging gas- saving technologies, the average fuel economy of U.S. cars would surge to 46 mpg, up from today’s 27 mpg. And SUVs could average 40 mpg, up from today’s 21 mpg, according to a recent study prepared in part by John DeCicco, a senior fellow at Environmental Defense, a New York City–based environmental group.

Thomas Jefferson on 'Intellectual Property'
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:24 am EDT, Oct  5, 2002

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it...He who receives an idea from me, receives instructions himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. That ideas should be spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature ... Inventions then cannot, in nature, be a subject of property.

CNN.com - Corpse art brings body donor rush - August 13, 2002
Topic: Miscellaneous 3:31 pm EDT, Oct  3, 2002

LONDON, England -- An exhibition of dissected human corpses which caused a storm of protest has prompted a rush of "body donors" who want to be preserved and put on display for future generations.

More than 20 people in Britain have agreed to donate their bodies to an institute run by German professor Gunther von Hagens, whose chosen preservation method is to skin the corpse, splay its insides and put it on display to the public.

"The most certain thing about life is death," Juanita Carberry, 77, from Kenya, told reporters at the exhibition on Monday. "And I believe in recycling everything that is recyclable."

"My body is a shell I live in. When I die I will have
finished with it. If I can dispose of any part of my body for a useful purpose then that is great."

Yahoo! News - Music Biz Pays for CD Price Scam
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:24 pm EDT, Oct  1, 2002

A $143.1 million price tag has been set for conspiring to rip off CD buyers.

And the world's five largest music companies and three largest music retailers have agreed to pay up.

The music moguls have decided to settle a CD price-fixing lawsuit brought against them by 41 states and commonwealths. States' attorneys say the music companies and retailers conspired to inflate the cost of CDs from 1995 to 2000, thus violating both federal and state antitrust laws and bilking consumers out of millions of dollars.

(And they wonder why fans resort to MP3-swapping? Yeesh.)
