"Last year," I told him, "I picked up a woman in labor who had three contractions in 12 minutes in my cab. We made it to the emergency room just in time. Her husband told me they'd been calling for over an hour. You had to wait only 40 minutes." Why Is It So Hard to Get a Cab in San Francisco? |

Groucho Marx to Warner Bros |

While preparing to film a movie entitled A Night in Casablanca, the Marx brothers received a letter from Warner Bros. threatening legal action if they did not change the films title. Warner Bros. deemed the films title too similar to their own Casablanca, released almost five years earlier in 1942, with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. In response Groucho Marx dispatched the following letter to the studios legal department. Dear Warner Brothers, Apparently there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your own. For example, up to the time that we contemplated making this picture, I had no idea that the city of Casablanca belonged exclusively to Warner Brothers. However, it was only a few days after our announcement appeared that we received your long, ominous legal document warning us not to use the name Casablanca. It seems that in 1471, Ferdinand Balboa Warner, your great-great-grandfather, while looking for a shortcut to the city of Burbank, had stumbled on the shores of Africa and, raising his alpenstock (which he later turned in for a hundred shares of common), named it Casablanca. I just dont understand your attitude. Even if you plan or releasing your picture, I am sure that the average movie fan could learn in time to distinguish between Ingrid Bergman and Harpo. I dont know whether I could, but I certainly would like to try. Groucho Marx to Warner Bros |

"Yes, the song the entire Western world sings at birthday parties is actually owned by a large corporation, and every time someone sings it in public without permission, it is an infringement of copyright. The songâs tune was published by schoolteachers Mildred and Patty Hill in 1893 as "Good Morning to All" in their book Song Stories for the Kindergarten. Children began singing it at birthday parties but with words they came up with themselves, which is how folk music typically develops. Nevertheless, the songâlyrics and allâis now owned by AOL Time Warner, the largest entertainment company on earth, and the corporation aggressively defends its property. " Audio |

This is such an interesting study. I took one of the tests and it was fairly accurate and disturbing. "Created by psychologists at Yale University and the University of Washington, this collection of Implicit Association Tests (IAT) measures unconscious bias. We invite you to test yourself and reveal what may be lingering in your psyche. Each test takes about five minutes, and your privacy is protected -- no identifying information is collected or distributed. Your test results may disturb you -- more than one million tests have been taken and the majority reveal unconscious bias. Dig Deeper into the science behind the tests, into stereotypes and prejudice, and into the societal effects of bias. Read the IAT tutorial. " Tolerance.org: Dig Deeper |

I love industry double-standards. Earthlink is strongly opposed to spam, but yet teams up with a company that pays people to advertise for them in their SPAM. Argh. "Match.com and EarthLink are getting together, with officials announcing a deal Thursday that puts the online dating service on the Internet service provider's (ISPs) Web site and connecting singles around the world.
