This industrious gentleman has reconstructed the front panel of an iPod out of an African wood. The results speak for themselves. http://www.bit-tech.net/modding/2005/07/05/wood_ipod_zapwizard/1.html iPod modder in wood veneer |

Turns out that livestock (goats, cows) *love* kudzu. You can make tea and baskets from it. Two seasons of feeding on it by livestock kills it! This show is on Alabama Public TV (APT), but you can probably request that your library order it from UA. http://www.cptr.ua.edu/kudzu/ |

This fits somewhere between recreation and politics, so here goes... This woman was tazered during a traffic stop because she was being placed under arrest for having a suspended license. I find it somewhat humorous due to her general demeanor and disbelief of the officer's actions or intent. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/content/news/video/taser_video3a.html |

Every once and a while, when I log into a FreeBSD machine, I recieve this fortune: Between 1950 and 1952, a bored weatherman, stationed north of Hudson Bay, left a monument that neither government nor time can eradicate. Using a bulldozer abandoned by the Air Force, he spent two years and great effort pushing boulders into a single word. It can be seen from 10,000 feet, silhouetted against the snow. Government officials exchanged memos full of circumlocutions (no Latin equivalent exists) but failed to word an appropriation bill for the destruction of this cairn, that wouldn't alert the press and embarrass both Parliament and Party. It stands today, a monument to human spirit. If life exists on other planets, this may be the first message received from us. -- The Realist, November, 1964. So my interest got peaked and I started looking at photomaps north of Hudson Bay. What I've found so far is an interesting splotch which makes me wonder -- what *is* this? http://maps.google.ca/maps?ll=64.916840,-87.878265&spn=0.659180,1.010742&t=k&hl=en Another large splotch, obviously something that's been edited out; is it a goverment installation, or the word I've been looking for above. |

Just discovered something interesting; gmail won't allow you to recieve RAR files. I had the occasion to need to recieve a RAR file with some documentation in it and discovered, much to my dismay, that gmail blocked the arbitrary extension ".rar". I changed the file to .tar, which passed through unimpeded, thus showing that no file-type detection is being used. Quite disturbing for those who use RAR for things other than piracy. |

Once again I find myself out of work. Not just out of work, but the reasons given were that my department found itself reorganizing. I have a pretty good lead on the how/why; a friend of mine went to work for another company for a few months and got a return offer within 90 days. He passed up a permanent job for a contract job -- and he's going into management. Fun. So I got kicked out of a company because my shithead friend got made manager, and I was let go to eliminate any conflicts of interest. Sigh. Must life always be this interesting? I guess I'll go back to reading Machiavelli. |
