"More and more security research comes to the conclusion that personal firewalls are ineffective in controlling outbound traffic."
(sarcasm) I've never thought of that before. Wow, I guess they are right. (/sarcasm) Kerio. IP Tables. ipfw. ipf. But that's just blocking ports -- are there any open-source outbound content compliance packages? Personal Firewalls Ineffective at Outbound Traffic Compliance |

No More Strippers At Funerals In China |

China has added strippers at funerals to its burgeoning list of proscribed activities, the BBC reports. Bare-assed ladies are apparently deployed at rural send-offs to boost mourner numbers, since "large crowds are seen as a mark of honour". To show they mean business, the authorities have arrested the leaders of five striptease troupes, including two involved in a farmer's funeral in Donghai county, Jiangsu province on 16 August, which was exposed by a Chinese TV station. Local officials subsequently ordered an end to the traditional practice - which they dubbed "obscene performances" - and declared that "funeral plans have to be submitted in advance", according to Xinhua news agency.
I wonder if Dolemite started this when he was in the Far East. ;-) No More Strippers At Funerals In China |

SSHFS is a really nice piece of software, because it just makes your life just a bit easier. It can 'mount' a directory of a remote SSH server and you can use it as a normal directory.
About time. NFS + SSH = SSHFS |

My brother just sent this to me with the note that "I got lost in this for an hour." I'm really looking forward to reading it in a few minutes or hours. Looks really interesting, covering 1890s to 1970s in a few pages. I didn't see much about my favorite subject though -- the Long Lines division. Those were the folks who did the microwave stuff. We can make him better, more aggressive...?! |

A single gene can turn a docile fly into a fighter. Ralph Greenspan and Herman Dierick of The Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, California, bred fruit flies to be aggressive. After 21 generations, they were 30 times more aggressive than controls, as measured by an index of fighting ability. Not only did they start more fights, and ones that lasted longer, they were also fiercer, wrestling and flipping opponents rather than just chasing and hitting them.
This cannot result it anything good based on evidence from past works of fiction (X-men, etc.) and computer games (Doom, Quake *). We can make him better, more aggressive...?! |

Here are some pictures taken of an abandoned Russian submarine base. From the looks of things, I'd say they are presently turning the site into a museum. There's some excellent photography here as well. Pictures of a Russian Sub Base |

Reaching out into the realm of even more expensive cruise missles, there is work underway for a missle called the RATTLRS, which has the basic aerodynamic shape of an engine nacele from an SR-71, complete with aero-spike and virtually nothing else. Speeds capable of an estimated 3.5 Mach, using high-temperature turbine technology. A picture of the missle was printed in Scientific American, but I have not yet been able to locate one on the web. Explosive payload is 250 lbs. Jane's will probably have more info as it nears production. Picture! RATTLRS Cruise Missile is Turbine Based |
