A Sports Drink for Children Is Jangling Some Nerves
Topic: Health and Wellness 12:31 pm EDT, Sep 26, 2005

The company's marketing materials describe the drink as a way to kick-start the morning for children as young as 4. The company Web site, adorned with a picture of an elementary school wrestler and a gymnast, says its drink can help a child "develop fully as a high-performance athlete" and fill nutritional gaps "in a sport that is physically and mentally demanding."

Ummm...

liferea -- RSS Aggregator for GNOME
Topic: Technology 5:33 pm EDT, Sep 24, 2005

Liferea is a news aggregator for online news feeds. There are many other news readers available, but these others are not available for Linux or require many extra libraries to be installed. Liferea tries to fill this gap by creating a fast, easy to use, easy to install news aggregator for GTK/GNOME.

Verizon Introduces Fiber Optic TV Service
Topic: Business 4:17 pm EDT, Sep 23, 2005

Verizon Communications began taking orders yesterday for its new television service, which the company hopes will draw business away from cable and satellite providers.

I'm hoping it will be a win for everyone when I can buy voice, video and data -- aka data, data and data -- from either an RBOC or a cable company.

Lost Garden: Nintendo's Genre Innovation Strategy: Thoughts on the Revolution's new controller
Topic: Video Games 2:33 pm EDT, Sep 23, 2005

What we can however discuss in some detail are the two central philosophies behind the Revolution controller and their market implications.

* The increasingly hardcore nature of the game industry is causing a contraction of the industry.
* New intuitive controller options will result in innovative game play that will bring new gamers into the fold.

This is a very insightful look at what's going on with the next generation of consoles coming out over the next year.

Topic: Business 11:59 am EDT, Sep 23, 2005

A consortium of eight companies said on Thursday that it would spend about $100 million to prepare applications to build two nuclear reactors, in Mississippi and Alabama, a step that seems to move the industry closer to its first new reactor order since the 1970's.

Plane Lands Safely in Los Angeles After Landing Gear Becomes Stuck
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:12 am EDT, Sep 22, 2005

A JetBlue airliner whose front landing gear became stuck at a 90-degree angle after takeoff landed safely Wednesday night after circling the skies over Los Angeles for nearly three hours. Many of the 140 passengers watched live coverage of their plight on television monitors embedded in the backs of seats.

I watched this live on CNN this afternoon (while working out at the Gym at Google, no less).

Whither DNS?
Topic: Computer Networking 12:57 pm EDT, Sep 21, 2005

The Domain Name System is often though of as an integral part of the Internet. Without it, how can you ever locate anything?

Well, quite easily, thank you very much.

Interesting take.

Maybe DNS will fade into irrelevance between search and bad management (ICANN). I've started to think that it is maybe bad design that end users ever see hostnames.

Whither DNS?

California Wants to Serve a Warning With Fries - New York Times
Topic: Health and Wellness 12:41 pm EDT, Sep 21, 2005

Americans may have plenty of reasons to fear French fries. While they are one of the country's favorite foods, they are soaked with trans fats, loaded with sodium and full of simple carbs, the bad kind. And, it turns out, they are also full of a chemical called acrylamide, which is known to cause cancer in laboratory rats and mice.

California wants to put a "...contains a substance known to the state of California..." label on french fries and potato chips. At the rate they're going, before much longer, every object in the state of California will bear such a label :/
