A Princeton-led research group has discovered an isolated community of bacteria nearly two miles underground that derives all of its energy from the decay of radioactive rocks rather than from sunlight. According to members of the team, the finding suggests life might exist in similarly extreme conditions even on other worlds.

Caltrain passengers should expect 20 to 30 minute delays this morning, after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a northbound train this morning in Mountain View, a spokesman for the agency said.

Honda Motor wants to persuade Americans to trade in their gasoline-fueled cars for diesel. Over the weekend, Honda unveiled a new diesel engine that it says burns as cleanly as a gasoline one, and with about 25 percent higher mileage. The company said it hoped to start selling cars in the United States with the new engines as early as 2009.
