Yuri's Night Bay Area '07
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:12 pm EST, Mar  2, 2007

Simultaneously held in over 30 countries and 91 locations worldwide, Yuri's Night World Space Parties celebrate humanity's first venture into space (by Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin). The event serves as both a tribute to our global heritage of innovation in space exploration and a reminder of how much more is out there to be discovered. This will be the 7th annual Yuri's Night Party to take place in the United States, and the theme for 2007 is the Green-ification of space.

Yuri's Night Bay Area 2007 is a celebration of humanity with a focus on space, technology, art and performance. It is intended to be held in NASA Ames Hanger 211 (Moffett Field) on Friday April 13th. Our team of engineers, artists, scientists and event producers are coordinating a compelling evening of education, discovery and networking opportunities, which will be followed by a multimedia journey unlike anything produced in the Bay Area before. As we reach out to the world to spread passion for extraterrestrial exploration, we aim to not only celebrate and raise excitement but simultaneously to educate and increase awareness. Join us on Friday April 13th, 2007 in a dance of global unity, inspiration, joy and celebration!

RE: Satire: Experts call for restrictions on childhood imagination - CNN.com
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:56 pm EST, Feb 22, 2007

Decius wrote:

"Defuse the ticking time-bomb known as your child's imagination before it explodes and destroys her completely," said child-safety expert Kenneth McMillan, who advised the HHS in composing the guidelines. "New data shows a disturbing correlation between serious accidents and the ability of children to envision a world full of exciting possibility."

The guidelines, titled "Boundless Imagination, Boundless Hazards: Ways To Keep Your Kids Safe From A World Of Wonder," are posted on the HHS website, and will also be available in brochure form in pediatricians' offices across the country.

According to McMillan, children can suffer broken bones, head trauma, and even fatal injuries from unsupervised exposure to childlike awe. "If your children are allowed to unlock their imaginations, anything from a backyard swing set to a child's own bedroom can be transformed into a dangerous undersea castle or dragon's lair," McMillan said. "But by encouraging your kids to think linearly and literally, and constantly reminding them they can never be anything but human children with no extraordinary characteristics, you can better ensure that they will lead prolonged lives."

So, in summary, dating serially is for chumps. If you really want to have a better fail-safe, be less affected by resistance, and have a wonderful net increase in power, go for parallel relationships. It’s the only way.

Iceweasel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:19 pm EST, Feb  6, 2007

Iceweasel is the name of two currently independent Mozilla Firefox rebranding projects. One is part of the Gnuzilla project, a GNU project to provide versions of Mozilla programs which are made of entirely free software. The other is a rebranded build prepared by Debian in order to satisfy a demand from Mozilla that they either drop the Firefox name or comply with other terms that Debian policies find unacceptable.

Ok... this is getting ridiculous.

Apple - Thoughts on Music
Topic: Technology 8:09 pm EST, Feb  6, 2007

Steve Jobs on the future of DRM...

The third alternative is to abolish DRMs entirely. Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats. In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players. This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat. If the big four music companies would license Apple their music without the requirement that it be protected with a DRM, we would switch to selling only DRM-free music on our iTunes store. Every iPod ever made will play this DRM-free music.

Why would the big four music companies agree to let Apple and others distribute their music without using DRM systems to protect it? The simplest answer is because DRMs haven’t worked, and may never work, to halt music piracy. Though the big four music companies require that all their music sold online be protected with DRMs, these same music companies continue to sell billions of CDs a year which contain completely unprotected music. That’s right! No DRM system was ever developed for the CD, so all the music distributed on CDs can be easily uploaded to the Internet, then (illegally) downloaded and played on any computer or player.
