Europe is not the only focus of efforts to build a rival to GPS, the U.S. constellation of navigation satellites. U.S. control of the world's only fully functional satellite navigation system is fueling efforts by China, Japan and India to develop alternatives to GPS for regional coverage, and in China's case as a stepping stone to a global system, U.S. satellite navigation experts said.

After years of industry speculation, Amazon.com is getting into the digital music business. Amazon, the Internet’s most successful seller of physical CDs, today announced plans to introduce a music download store later this year, selling songs and albums in the MP3 format without the anti-copying protection used by most online music retailers.

President Bush intervened in March 2004 to avert a crisis over the National Security Agency’s domestic eavesdropping program after Attorney General John Ashcroft, Director Robert S. Mueller III of the F.B.I. and other senior Justice Department aides all threatened to resign, a former deputy attorney general testified Tuesday.

EFF to psychic: There will be a DMCA abuse suit in the near future |

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has begun fighting back this week against one DMCA takedown abuser. The organization has filed a lawsuit against "paranormalist" Uri Geller for sending a takedown notice to YouTube over a video that heavily criticizes his psychic and magical abilities. The suit alleges that Geller and his company Explorologist Ltd. "knowingly and materially" misrepresented their claim under the DMCA when demanding that the video be taken down, and therefore violated the DMCA itself.

As events unfold, it appears that the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE), the President's plan to return humans to the Moon and then onto Mars, is on the classic pride-before-the-fall trajectory. In the spirit of collegial exchanges, I offer the following observations and thoughts for our recovery.
