Sprint starts packet shift |

] Sprint Corp., which sells local telephone services in 18 ] states, has started converting its local-phone network to ] a technology that increases capacity and allows the ] company to sell new services. Sprint will buy ] packet-switching equipment from Nortel Networks Corp. to ] upgrade the network. Under a $1.1 billion agreement with ] Nortel in 2001, Sprint planned to complete the conversion ] in eight years. Now the transition may take 13 years, ] said Michael Fuller, president of Sprint's local ] division. While traditional phone calls travel over ] dedicated circuits that remain open for the duration of a ] conversation, packet-based technology breaks voice and ] data traffic into digital pieces that are sent separately ] and reassembled upon arrival. ] Sony on Wednesday introduced the PSX, a follow-up to the ] hugely popular PlayStation 2, and touted it as a device ] that creates a new entertainment category. ] ] In addition to the basic features of a game console, PSX ] will offer a DVD recorder, a 120GB hard drive, a TV ] tuner, an Ethernet port, a USB 2.0 port and a Memory ] Stick slot. Not much info here (this *isn't* the PS3, btw) ... won't ship in the US until the beginning of next year. This is Sony trying to be smart and keep M$ out of the living room. ] Novell Inc. today forcefully joined the tumult ] surrounding Unix and Linux by challenging The SCO Group ] Inc. to essentially put up or shut up over its ] allegations that some of SCO's Unix code has illegally ] made its way into Linux. ] ] In a letter on its Web site from Novell CEO and President ] Jack Messman, the Provo, Utah-based company lashed out by ] challenging SCO's assertion that it owns the copyrights ] and patents to Unix System V. Novell, which had earlier ] acquired the Unix systems business of AT&T Corp., broke ] up and sold its Unix properties in 1994 and 1995.
