] Under a system deployed on the White House Web site for

Picking Up the Pieces
Topic: Technology 4:06 pm EDT, Jul 17, 2003

] Advanced scanning technology makes it possible to
] reconstruct documents previously thought safe from prying
] eyes, sometimes even pages that have been ripped into
] confetti-size pieces. And although a great deal of
] sensitive information is stored digitally these days,
] recent corporate scandals have shown that the paper
] shredder is still very much in use.

Wow!

] "AOL is divesting itself of something that was a bad

About what I figured...

WESH.com - News - NASA Works To Build New Spaceship
Topic: Science 3:55 pm EDT, Jul 17, 2003

] Developing a new space plane in five years is a very
] short timetable. It took more than 10 years to get the
] shuttle flying. But the idea behind the new space plane
] is to make it simple, small and reliable, and not to
] break too much new technological ground.

If they have a conservative enough design, it is absolutely possible to do this ... but I expect NASA will probably drop the ball anyway...

] The Columbia astronauts lived for almost a minute after
] their final communication with mission control, well
] after signs that the craft was in serious trouble,
] investigators at NASA and the Columbia Accident
] Investigation Board said yesterday.

IMHO, the shuttle system has become a case study of how not to do large scale engineering. We need to mothball the shuttle and build a new system ASAP...

AOL has cut Mozilla loose. Not clear what AOL's motivation is; maybe cuddling up to M$, maybe just plain old cost cutting. Not obvious to me what this means for Mozilla. May be bad news in the short run since AOL was pumping a ton of cash into it...
