Pfizer Moves to Stem Canadian Drug Imports
Topic: Politics and Law 4:36 pm EDT, Aug  7, 2003

] Just days after the House of Representatives voted to
] legalize the import of cheap prescription drugs from
] Canada, Pfizer has moved to squelch the nascent trade at
] its source.

This is an example of a larger issue of big corporations trying to restrict trade of their products, a right that I believe they don't have. Another interesting case was one of some British Wal-Mart-alike importing Levi's from the US; they retail for something like $80 in Europe! Levi used some crazy EU trademark law to stop it, IIRC...

Did SCO really think that IBM would just bend over??

Red Hat Goes on the Offensive Against SCO
Topic: Miscellaneous 3:58 pm EDT, Aug  4, 2003

] "We filed this complaint to stop SCO from making
] unsubstantiated and untrue public statements attacking
] Red Hat Linux and the integrity of the Open Source
] software development process," Red Hat General Counsel
] Mark Webbink said in a statement. "Red Hat is confident
] that its current and future customers will continue to
] realize the significant value that our Red Hat Linux
] platform provides without interruption."

The real question now is how long this will go on -- and how far corporate Linux adoption will be set back -- before SCO bankrupts itself litigating IBM.

A License Paradox
Topic: Computers 1:13 pm EDT, Aug  4, 2003

] There's no free lunch here. Sun can't placate SCO and
] also respect the intellectual property rights of the
] Linux kernel developers. If there's to be a Sun Linux,
] then it will carry the same phantom taint as Red Hat
] Linux or SuSE Linux or SCO's own UnitedLinux offering.

The game Sun's trying to play with SCO.

Homeland Security: Apply Those Patches!
Topic: Computer Security 3:43 pm EDT, Jul 31, 2003

] The decision by the DHS to drum up publicity for security
] patch application, especially for 'critical' flaws, is
] seen as a direct response to well-known complaints that
] IT administrators have not been vigilant about installing
] fixes despite the clear danger of worms, viruses and

] Poindexter contract that began being traded on
] Dublin-based futures exchange Tradesports. Yep,
] Poindexter is about to serve as an example of how
] accurately a futures market can predict future events --
] the very idea that he was espousing.
