ICANN Passes Final VeriSign Contract to DOC
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:09 pm EDT, Oct 16, 2003

] In commenting about Tuesday's deliverance of the policy
] revisions to the DOC, ICANN's President and Chief
] Executive Officer M. Stuart Lynn talked about the
] importance of his organization in hammering out policy
] for the Internet.
]
] "It is in the interests of all Internet users-commercial
] and private, businesses and individuals-that ICANN
] continue to develop and mature as a vehicle for consensus
] policy development," Lynn said. "These new agreements, by
] eliminating much of the unique legacy treatment of
] VeriSign/NSI, will be a major step in that direction.
] They will help to maintain the continuing stability of
] the DNS as an important and effective part of the
] Internet, and will improve the ability of ICANN to serve
] as an effective administrator of this important
] resource."

From 2 years ago ... eerily prescient of the current mess.

ICANN | .com Registry Agreement
Topic: Technology 12:07 pm EDT, Oct 16, 2003

] On 25 May 2001, ICANN and VeriSign, Inc., entered into an
] Unsponsored Registry Agreement under which VeriSign
] operates the .com top-level domain. The agreement and its
] appendices may be viewed by following the links below.

Alright ... here it is ... I haven't had time to read it yet. The agreement was between verisign and ICANN and "overseen" by the Dept. of Commerce which apparently had some veto power in the matter.

I think I've brought this up before: is verisign's contract with ICANN or with some US Govt agency (Commerce?)

NIST -- New Encryption Modes
Topic: Cryptography 5:09 pm EDT, Oct 13, 2003

NIST is trying to update the venerable set (CBC/OFB/CFB/counter) of encryption modes. Some of the new ones provide "authenticated encryption," i.e. the equivalent of encryption and MACing with one key and significantly less cost than encrypt-then-MAC.

In light of Vaudenay's CBC padding attack, authenticated encryption seems prudent.

How to break CBC encryption using certain common padding schemes given a "padding oracle", a node that tells you whether or not a given ciphertext corresponds to a well-padded plaintext.

Who is NetSol's .com/.net contract with? Dept. of Commerce? How about not renew it or take it away from them?

It is *crazy* that .com/.net should be run by a for-profit company which will be incented to do dumbass things like sitefinder ... it should be operated by a non-profit/non-government organization, overseen by ICANN/IAB/IETF/etc.

And how much is being able to run sitefinder really worth to verisign, anyway? Is it really worth getting involed in a nasty legal battle with ICANN and *making everyone that actually runs the net hate them*??
