China Agrees to Postpone Wireless Plan
Topic: Society 5:17 pm EDT, Apr 22, 2004

] China agreed on Wednesday to give up a plan to impose
] its own standard for wireless technology, essentially
] agreeing to join the rest of the world rather than
] dividing it up.

I think this is good news though I'm not sure of what all
issues are involved. Is this really a trade thing or is it a
key-escrow sort of thing? It would be totally assinine for China
to deploy non-standards to create an entry-barrier for foreign
electronics...

] machine — is as good as or better than the old method, says a

Wow!

Teaching an Old Walkman Some New Steps
Topic: Business 10:49 am EDT, Apr 19, 2004

] Last July, while most people were taking summer vacations,
] the Sony Corporation of America made a little noticed,
] but crucial announcement. Jay Samit, a longtime music
] industry executive, was appointed general manager of Sony
] Connect, a new subsidiary that will sell songs online and
] allow consumers to play them on their Sony gadgets.

Its really remarkable the way Sony screwed this up. At one point,
Sony was effectively suing itself: on one side as a member of some
anti-drm consumer electronics group and on the other as a pro-IP
record label thing!

They aren't going to make things better by introducing yet
another propriatery media format, either.

Struck in Side, Many Cars Fare Poorly in Safety Test
Topic: Society 10:39 am EDT, Apr 19, 2004

] Federal safety data has shown for years that booming
] sales of S.U.V.'s and large pickup trucks are adding to
] the death toll of people riding in cars, particularly in
] side-impact accidents. At the same time, S.U.V.'s and
] pickup trucks do not, as a class, better protect their
] own occupants, because they tend to be less stable and
] more prone to rollovers than passenger cars.

Guess what: if you're in a sedan and you get t-boned by an
SUV, you're fucked.

]
] Now it's getting interesting. BayStar wants SCO to
] immediately redeem BayStar's 20,000 shares of SCO's A-1
] Convertible Preferred Stock. They say SCO has breached
] their agreement. SCO denies any breach. Here is the

] release. My, this was a short honeymoon.

BayStar is basically telling SCO they want their $20M back.

U: SCOX closed down $1.29 (13.35%) at $8.37
