Sun stares down Red Hat with Solaris 10
Topic: Business 3:46 pm EST, Nov 15, 2004

] "We're hoping that people may be happy to download this
] commercial version of Solaris and basically use it at no
] charge to convince themselves that it's as cool as they
] think it is," said Mark McLain, vice president for
] software marketing at Sun.

Solaris is not cool.

More to the point, this proves just how badly Sun misunderstands
open-source and free software. Free as in freedom, not beer.
Free software isn't great because I don't have to pay money to
receive a copy of it. Its great because I'm not beholden to some company who wants to lock me into their propriatery system and then fuck me as hard as they can.

RE: Women denied access to birth control
Topic: Society 5:12 pm EST, Nov 12, 2004

This is totally assinine. The real problem here is that we
don't have a theory of ethics that adequately accounts for
abortion. If abortion is murder, then what is miscarriage?
Logically, it would have to be something like involuntary
manslaughter. A theory of self-defense might allow late-term abortions even if they were proscribed otherwise.

The problem is that this isn't the debate that we're having. The debate we're having is on the level of one about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Historical abortion beliefs of the Christian church
Topic: Society 5:08 pm EST, Nov 12, 2004

] Pope Pius IX reversed the stance of the Roman Catholic
] church once more. He dropped the distinction between the
] "fetus animatus" and "fetus inanimatus" in 1869. Canon
] law was revised in 1917 and 1983 and to refer simply to
] "the fetus." The tolerant approach to abortion which had
] prevailed in the Roman Catholic Church for centuries
] ended. The church requires excommunication for abortions
] at any stage of pregnancy.

Bork Hearings Resurface as Impediment to Specter
Topic: Politics and Law 10:31 am EST, Nov 11, 2004

] WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 - Many liberal women have never
] forgiven Senator Arlen Specter for his pointed
] questioning of Prof. Anita F. Hill, whose accusations of
] sexual harassment against Judge Clarence Thomas, then a
] Supreme Court nominee, riveted the nation. But
] conservatives have never forgiven him for crossing party
] lines to defeat another Supreme Court nominee, Judge
] Robert H. Bork.

Look up Bork if you've never heard of him before (I couldn't
find something to blog immediately) ... he was nominated to
the Supreme Court towards the end of Reagan's presidency.

Bush Picks Gonzales to Succeed Ashcroft
Topic: Politics and Law 4:56 pm EST, Nov 10, 2004

] WASHINGTON - With a hug and words of high praise,
] President Bush (news - web sites) named Alberto Gonzales
] as attorney general on Wednesday, elevating the
] administration's most prominent Hispanic to a highly
] visible post in the war on terror.

He isn't great but better than Ashcroft, probably.

Karl Rove Is in Position to Consolidate Republican Majority

] WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 - Victory may have a thousand fathers,
] but if President Bush's triumph this week had a Big Daddy
] it was indisputably Karl Rove - the seer, strategist and
] serious student of politics and the presidency that a
] grateful Mr. Bush himself referred to as the architect of
] his winning campaign.

] PARIS (Reuters) - Yasser Arafat lay in a coma ``between
] life and death'' on Friday as senior Palestinian
] officials met to consider a future without him.

When he first went to Paris, I was going to pose the question "What if Arafat dies?"

Early Exit - A squeaker!
Topic: Politics and Law 4:31 pm EST, Nov  2, 2004

] The first wave of exit-poll data reaching my desk comes
] from a variety of sources. In some states the sources
] disagree about the specific margin by which a candidate
] leads, but never about which candidate is out in front.
] Some of the confusion may stem from the mixing of morning
] exit-poll numbers with early afternoon numbers. With
] those provisos and the understanding that the early
] numbers are predictive of nothing without their
] accompanying computer model, here's what I've heard:

Slate is leaking exit poll data.
