] We have drafted a new open source license based on the ] Mozilla Public License, version 1.1 ("MPL"). We have ] worked hard to make the Common Development and ] Distribution License ("CDDL") as reusable as possible. Sun's new open-source license; they haven't yet committed to releasing Solaris 10 under this but it sounds like that's the idea. They've submitted it to OSI; it sounds like it is definitely not GPL-compatible. I'm not sure if it even matters; does anyone think Solaris code ending up in the Linux kernel or vice-versa would be a good thing? Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) Information |

] "We're hoping that people may be happy to download this ] commercial version of Solaris and basically use it at no ] charge to convince themselves that it's as cool as they ] think it is," said Mark McLain, vice president for ] software marketing at Sun. Solaris is not cool. More to the point, this proves just how badly Sun misunderstands open-source and free software. Free as in freedom, not beer. Free software isn't great because I don't have to pay money to receive a copy of it. Its great because I'm not beholden to some company who wants to lock me into their propriatery system and then fuck me as hard as they can. Sun stares down Red Hat with Solaris 10 |
