Write Long, Badly and Prosper
Topic: Education 11:15 am EDT, May 29, 2005

When the administrators of the SAT announced that their new test would include a 25-minute essay portion, writing teachers around the country were optimistic. We hoped it would be a genuine test of writing ability, and that over time it would increase the emphasis on good writing in high schools and lead to better-prepared, more-literate students being sent off to college.

Unfortunately, that no longer seems likely. Instead, the SAT essay has turned out to be a completely artificial exercise that appears to reward students for writing badly.

Furniture - Tetris Shelving
Topic: Cyber-Culture 10:06 am EDT, May 14, 2005

] This design, by Brooklyn company Brave Space, is intended
] for "Life-size play", and the blocks really do have the
] exact proportions of the original Tetris pieces. The
] storage units are sold piece by piece, so you can buy as
] many as you want and arrange them however you want. Just
] think - you can recreate your own gigantic Tetris
] game in your living room - only without the bottom
] row disappearing every time you align things properly!

This is awesome.

Each piece is $350. That's a little too much. The first to have the same concept in Ikea style fiberboard cheapness, wins all the money. Ready, set, go!

The Top 10 Intelligent Designs (or Creation Myths)
Topic: Science 9:26 am EST, Apr  1, 2005

] Scientists now believe that there is an intrinsic logic
] to our reality, that there are absolutes, laws of nature.
] Much remains a mystery, and as one question is answered,
] many others arise. The question now facing Pennsylvania's
] Dover School District is whether or not the imposition of
] one creation belief on a multi-ethnic, secular student
] body is in keeping with the law that prohibits the
] creation of a state religion. If they allow one belief
] system to be taught, surely they must also teach others?
]
]
] To help out with this dilemma, LiveScience presents a
] list of those Creation Myths that helped define
] civilizations both past and present.

I figured you'd get a kick out of this.

Butterflies Over Los Angeles
Topic: Biology 11:14 am EST, Mar 31, 2005

There is a fairly rare migration of Painted Lady butterflies going on right now. All throughout the LA basin, you can see these small orange creatures moving northwest. It is wonderful.

] The images above - exclusive to the Wooster site and
] provided by Banksy - are of Banksy installing four pieces
] in New York's most prestigious museums - The Brooklyn
] Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of
] Modern Art, and the Museum of Natural History.

He has incredible stuff on his website. I especially like his rats.
]
] Dressed as a British pensioner, over the last few days
] Banksy entered each of the galleries and attached one of
] his own works, complete with authorative name plaque and
] explanation.

Avoiding Tolls On The Massachusetts Turnpike
Topic: Recreation 11:31 am EST, Mar  2, 2005

] Recently, while giving away yet another $1.00 of my
] hard-earned money for the privilege of driving into town,
] I wondered: how flexible are they about the tolls? So I
] decided to undertake a series of experiments.

] There are three ways to pay tolls on the "Mass Pike," as
] we call it:

] 1) You can drive through the "Fast Lane," which is a
] computerized system that detects a small device that you
] keep on your windshield, while pelting your car with
] gamma rays and slowly giving you cancer of the prostate.
] All Fast Lanes require that you slow your car to 15 mph,
] and some make you stop completely, giving new meaning to
] the word "Fast."

] 2) You can pay cash to the friendly toll booth operator,
] who will give you change, and, if you're lucky, a surly
] grunt.

] 3) If you have exact change, you can use the "baskets,"
] which are big scoop-shaped buckets into which you throw
] your money. The money slides down a chute, where it is
] then processed by either highly efficient money-sorting
] machinery, or financially astute elves. It's a mystery.

If you have a few minutes read through it. It is rather funny. I especially like the last experiment and letters.

Pilate: "s0rry d00d, j00 r g3ttin' 0wnz0red."

My jaw ached from laughing so hard.

"Dude, the mental image of a status bar above a crucifix was just too much, and my parents think I'm insane now."

Health and Fitness Calculators
Topic: Health and Wellness 12:07 am EST, Feb 22, 2005

] This Health and fitness calculator from Fitwise.com Includes:
] Blood Pressure, Body Mass Index, Heartrate Zones, Ideal Weight,
] Percent Body Fat (Circumference), Percent Body Fat (YMCA), Risk
] of Chronic Disease.

I've been surfing around the web trying to find free exercise resources, like how to properly use gym equipment, count calories, etc. You'd think that as diet-obsessed as our country is, this would be easy to find. Quite the opposite though, the vast majority of stuff out there is nearly 98%+ advertising, "buy my book before I tell you anything" or "lose weight fast" BS.

Every so often though I find something useful -- Free sites that are relatively low on ads, which actually have some useful information or tools. This is one of them, with a webpage that has several handy little utilities for calculating various fitness percentages.

Other sites with relatively good information to ad ratios: (I'll get around to meme-ing them at some point):
