American Social Hygiene Posters, ca. 1910-1970
Topic: Health and Wellness 2:48 pm EDT, Oct 21, 2003

From the Scout Report: This fascinating collection of social hygiene posters (designed to inculcate certain social practices regarding hygiene, friendship, prostitution, and mental health) is culled from the fine holdings of the Social Welfare History Archives at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

There are some gems to be found here, and the collection is easily browsed. Consider "Beware of Chance Acquaintances" and "Danger in Familiarities".

Masturbation Reduces Risk of Prostate Cancer
Topic: Health and Wellness 9:42 am EDT, Jul 17, 2003

Australian scientists have shown that the more men masturbate between the ages of 20 and 50, the less likely they are to develop the disease that kills more than half a million men each year.

Don't let those nuns convince you that it's a sin!

Right at home in the market / How M&Ms, Spam and Velveeta made it to the table
Topic: Health and Wellness 1:20 am EDT, Apr  8, 2003

as a fan of the Mcrib Sandwich, I am shocked and amazed by the following:

quoted:
===

Natick, Mass. -- Despite military chow's lousy reputation, many products that Northern California grocery shoppers buy every day have come from innovations created for the battlefield.

M&Ms were invented so World War II fighters could enjoy chocolate that didn't melt in the heat of the Pacific. Similarly, tins of processed Velveeta cheese and Spam became prominent parts of the American diet after thousands of World War II soldiers survived on the processed food.

Freeze-dried coffee and soup mixes, chopped and formed meat and lightweight backpacker entrees all have come from military needs. So did something called "retort packaging," a heat and water process much like canning that keeps plastic pouches of food shelf-stable for years. Even McDonald's boneless McRib sandwich came from technology developed by the Department of Defense's Combat Feeding Directorate.

] In the taxi to Richard's place, the conversation falls
] silent. He hasn't been tested in a couple of years, and
] he's reluctant to get a test now. He might very well be
] positive already. But as long as he doesn't know for
] sure, he can always hope that tonight is the night he
] gets the virus. Every date is potentially The One.
] Stepping out of the cab into the rain, I ask what he will
] do if he finds out one day that he has succeeded in being
] infected -- ending the fun of being a bug chaser. He
] stops, then says he might move on to being a gift giver:
] "If I know that he's negative and I'm fucking him, it
] sort of gets me off. I'm murdering him in a sense,
] killing him slowly, and that's sort of, as sick as it
] sounds, exciting to me."

this article actually made me cry. what the hell is happening in this country? does this go on in other countries? i'm not one to suggest how other people should live their lives, but what's wrong with these people? besides the suicidal tendencies? why do they "get off" doing it to other people?
