Long Video War Game Exposures
Topic: Arts 1:38 am EST, Feb 19, 2007

A set of long exposures that were taken while playing video war games of the 80's, created by Atari, Centuri & Taito. The photographs were shot from video game screens while playing the games. By recording each second of an entire game on 1 frame of film, captured complex patterns were captured not normally seen by the naked eye.

Fantastic! Where can I get prints?

Cartoon Network Chief Quits Over Marketing Stunt - New York Times
Topic: Current Events 4:23 pm EST, Feb 10, 2007

The head of the Cartoon Network resigned Friday following a marketing stunt that caused a terrorism scare in Boston and led police to shut down bridges and send in the bomb squad.

He said he regretted what had happened and felt ''compelled to step down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch.''

This seems a little drastic for the situation

Lights out on Edison's bulb?
Topic: Technology 9:13 am EST, Feb 10, 2007

The incandescent light bulb, perfected for mass use by Thomas A. Edison in the late 19th century, is being supplanted by fluorescent lighting that is more efficient and longer lasting.

Last month, California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine announced he would propose a bill to ban the use of incandescent bulbs in his state.

And Thursday, New Jersey Assemblyman Larry Chatzidakis introduced a bill that calls for the state to switch to fluorescent lighting in government buildings over the next three years.

"The light bulb was invented a long time ago and a lot of things have changed since then," said Chatzidakis, a Republican from Burlington. "I obviously respect the memory of Thomas Edison, but what we're looking at here is using less energy."

Many states encourage their residents to replace their incandescent bulbs through a federal program supported by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.

If the bulb's demise is on the horizon, Jack Stanley isn't ready to flip the "off" switch just yet.

"It's a convenient target. It's easy to see and easy to critique," said Stanley, curator of a museum that celebrates Edison's inventions in the town that has borne his name since the 1950s. "But think about the benefits and compare them to the drawbacks and your argument is already made."

Edison perfected the process of making the long-burning filaments used inside incandescent light bulbs so they could be mass produced.

Fluorescents, which create light by heating gases inside a glass tube, were developed in the early 20th century and sold publicly by the 1940s. They are generally considered to use more than 50 percent less energy and last several times longer than incandescent bulbs.

However, the mercury vapor inside fluorescents can damage the environment if the bulbs are broken, leading some states to require businesses that use large quantities of fluorescent lights to recycle them.

"It's a 19th-century invention that was perfected in the 20th century," he said. "That's part of the evolution of all inventions."

NYC cabbie returns bag of diamond rings
Topic: Society 11:10 am EST, Feb  8, 2007

The driver returned 31 diamond rings he found in his cab after dropping off the passenger, who had left him with a 30-cent tip on a $10.70 fare.

"All my life, I tried to be honest," said Osman Chowdhury, a native of Bangladesh. "Today is no different."

But the 41-year-old cabbie from Queens did have a message: "I'm proud of what I did so that people know New York taxi drivers are honest."

He said it never occurred to him to keep the diamonds.

"I'm not going to take someone else's money or property to make me rich. I don't want it that way," said the soft-spoken cabbie, who was a contractor in Bangladesh until he came to the United States 15 years ago.

He does not own a cab but rents one.

"I enjoy my life. I'm satisfied," said Chowdhury, who is single.

He didn't even mind the meager tip.

"I think some people might be broke," he said. "Or they're distracted."

Nice story

Don't Let Congress Shackle Digital Music
Topic: Current Events 10:45 am EST, Feb  8, 2007

* * *

The new Congress has barely begun, but the major record labels are already up to their old tricks.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein has re-introduced the PERFORM Act, a backdoor assault on your right to record off the radio. Satellite and digital radio stations as well as Internet webcasters would have to adopt digital rights management (DRM) restrictions or lose the statutory license for broadcasting music. Letters from constituents like you helped beat this dangerous proposal last year -- take action now to block it again.

This bill aims to hobble TiVo-like devices for satellite and digital radio. Such devices would be allowed to include "reasonable recording" features, but that excludes choosing and playing back selections based on song title, artist, or genre. Want to freely move recordings around your home network or copy them to the portable player of your choice? You'll be out of luck if PERFORM passes.

This bill would also mess with Internet radio. Today, Live365, Shoutcast, streaming radio stations included in iTunes, and myriad other smaller webcasters rely on MP3 streaming. PERFORM would in effect force them to use DRM-laden, proprietary formats, so you can say goodbye to software tools like Streamripper that let you record programming to listen to it later.

Tell your representatives to oppose the PERFORM Act now.

Discovery astronaut charged with battery and kidnapping
Topic: Society 7:11 am EST, Feb  6, 2007

Mission specialist Lisa Nowak is alleged to have tried to kidnap Colleen Shipman, who she appears to have considered a rival for the affections of her fellow astronaut William Oefelein.

Nowak is reported to have driven 1,000 miles from Houston, Texas, to Florida's Orlando International Airport. She wore a nappy to avoid having to make toilet stops.

Once at the airport, she disguised herself in a trench coat, wig, and glasses, and waited for Shipman to arrive on a flight from Houston.

Nevertheless, according to Shipman's police report, Nowak followed Shipman as she travelled on an airport bus from the arrivals hall to her car. Shipman told police that when she was nearly at her car, she heard a woman running behind her. Alarmed, she hurried to her car, got in, and locked the doors.

Nowak then pounded on the car window asking for a ride, and then to use a cell phone. When Shipman cracked the window to tell her "No", Nowak sprayed something into the car, burning Shipman's eyes.

Quite understandably, Shipman drove off at this point and called the police.

Police said when she was arrested, a search of Nowak's car turned up pepper spray, a steel mallet, and a BB gun, as well as black gloves, a folding knife with a 4-inch blade, rubber tubing and rubbish sacks.

Nowak claims she only wanted to scare Shipman and confront her about her relationship with Oefelein.

Nowak last flew on the STS 121 Shuttle return to flight test mission in July last year. It was the second flight since the loss of the Columbia.

I hope we didn't jinx it by being there!! :P

Texas Requires Cancer Vaccine for Girls
Topic: Current Events 8:59 am EST, Feb  3, 2007

Gov. Rick Perry ordered Friday that schoolgirls in Texas must be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, making Texas the first state to require the shots.

The girls will have to get Merck & Co.'s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, that are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer.

First, this is not about hangups this is about forcing a population to get vacinated against something that is not a threat to society. It can not be transmitted through daily interaction. Even if this is an epidemic this is not the way to address the situation. On top of that even if this vaccine had been tested for years and years we are talking about 11 year olds. Even though some 11 year old are acting like they are grown ups they aren't and there bodies are different/ Drug effects are different.

Jello:Schools already make kids get vaccinated for a variety of diseases. I don't think you can attend public school without being vaccinated for Mumps, Measles, Rubella or Polio, for instance. The reason for this is that children interact in manners that would allow for transmission: they touch each other, they sit near each other, they cough.

HPV is an epidemic. Most young people have it. Once you accept that children have sex with one another, and therefore act in a way that routinely transmits this disease... it follows that they should be vaccinated, and its no more Orwellian than vaccinating children against Measles, because they cough on one another.

Secondly, It is the first step in making laws taking away people's right to make decisions about their own bodies. I have two children that sit next to each other in my class. Kaitlyn and Dylan. Kaitlyn does not have a choice in the fact that Dylan often coughs on her or touches her or her stuff. Kaitlyn does have a choice on whether she lets Dylan have sex with her. If not that is rape and that is where the requirement belongs. Freedom of choice is the issue. I have two nieces who I love like they were my own. I help raise them it remains one of the two hardest things I have ever done. You don't mess with peoples right to make their own decision much less a parent's right to make decisions about their children. If we were there are much better places to start. If this flies they are one step closer to requiring all kinds of procedures and vaccinations because they know what's best for you and making things like abortion illegal.
