Wow. Strangely enough my dad remembers when this happened.

Weapons Ban Info
Topic: Current Events 12:30 pm EDT, Sep 14, 2004

Here is a site all about the weapons ban. (the history, implications, effectiveness, etc.)

My whole point on this issue is not that we should reimplement this particular ban. I just think this is an issue we need to address as a nation.

Weapons Ban Ends Today
Topic: Current Events 10:30 am EDT, Sep 13, 2004

]The 10-year-old assault weapons ban today, thus lifting the law
]that prohibits the manufacture and sale of 19 brands of semi-
]automatic weapons in the United States.

]Among the weapons that will be available at gun shops across
]America is the M-96 semi-automatic that sprays up to 120 bullets
]in 45 seconds. Another weapon is called the Street Sweeper for
]its ability to take out a lot of human targets in short order.

]Police Lt. Frank Boudreaux admitted having more of the guns on
]the streets could make his job more difficult and dangerous, but,
]he said, assault weapons are out there right now. The ban has not
]been effective, he said.

]"They (criminals) already have these weapons. They get them on
]the black market like everything else they get. The only thing
]the ban did is prevent gun collectors and honest citizens from
]purchasing these weapons. But yes, we consider these guns very
]dangerous," Boudreaux said.

]"I can't believe that anyone would think that having assault
]weapons on the streets is a good idea. It makes our job more
]difficult and much more dangerous. It also makes it more
]expensive. We're going to have to take counter measures in
]purchasing body armor and more powerful weapons. We're doing that
]now to some degree because the drug busts we make, a lot of them
]have assault weapons. With the ban being lifted, it will be
]easier for them to buy and use these weapons," Balthazar said.

Ok I know that the ban wasn't effective in keeping assault weapons off the streets but that doesn't mean we should have an open market. If this ban was useless then we need to be formulating another plan to keep these weapons off the streets. If terrorism is our major concern right now why make it easier to buy automatic wepons in our country. Honestly what possible reason could anyone have to need these types of weapons??

]There are reports of shooting and that the attackers are wearing suicide bomb belts.

This is sad. Hopefully it won't end tragically.

Canadians Join Protests
Topic: Current Events 10:09 am EDT, Aug 30, 2004

The people lined up against the wall of the customs building range in age between 17 and 58. They're students, teachers, professionals, Indians, Asians, white, black, people in Birkenstocks and people in button-down shirts and khakis.

Siraha Saeowala, 40, of Toronto, said he came for his children, who ask him nightly why airplanes are bombing cities in Iraq, and what happens to the children whose parents are killed in the war.

Their chants "War resisters welcome here," and "Opposing Bush ain't no crime, we'll take you in Canada anytime," draw mostly smiling faces

141 people came from Canada to help with the protest and make their feelings known.

Reason for war
Topic: Current Events 12:37 pm EDT, Jul 30, 2004

As President, I will wage this war with the lessons I learned in war. Before you go to battle, you have to be able to look a parent in the eye and truthfully say: "I tried everything possible to avoid sending your son or daughter into harm's way. But we had no choice. We had to protect the American people, fundamental American values from a threat that was real and imminent." So lesson one, this is the only justification for going to war.

And tonight, we have an important message for those who question the patriotism of Americans who offer a better direction for our country. Before wrapping themselves in the flag and shutting their eyes and ears to the truth, they should remember what America is really all about. They should remember the great idea of freedom for which so many have given their lives. Our purpose now is to reclaim democracy itself. We are here to affirm that when Americans stand up and speak their minds and say America can do better, that is not a challenge to patriotism; it is the heart and soul of patriotism.

A couple quotes from Kerry's speech that ring true.

Nader Supporters?
Topic: Current Events 7:02 pm EDT, Jul 12, 2004

In his run for the White House, Ralph Nader is getting help from an unexpected source: Republicans. Of the $1 million that Nader has raised for his campaign so far, about $50,000 is from donors who have also given to President George W. Bush's campaign.

Richard Egan, Bush's former ambassador to Ireland, his son John and his daughter-in-law Pamela each contributed the maximum $2,000 donation to Nader's effort.

This is an interesting tactic.
