BBC NEWS | World | Africa | Poets hail Nelson Mandela's life
Topic: Arts 11:21 am EDT, Jul 18, 2006

A book of poetry celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela has been launched to mark the South African statesman's 88th birthday on Tuesday.
...

It is not for the safety of silence
That this man has opened his arms to lead.
The strength of his words hangs in the air
As the strength in his eyes remains on the sky;
And the years of impatient waiting draw on
While this man burns to clear the smoke in the air.
There is fire here,
Which no prison
Can kill in this man;
And I watch it in Mandela.

The Tragedy of the Leaves : Charles Bukowski

The Tragedy of the Leaves

I awakened to dryness and the ferns were dead,
the potted plants yellow as corn;
my woman was gone
and the empty bottles like bled corpses
surrounded me with their uselessness;
the sun was still good, though,
and my landlady's note cracked in fine and
undemanding yellowness; what was needed now
was a good comedian, andcient style, a jester
with jokes upon absurd pain; pain is absurd
because it exists, nothing more;
I shaved carefully with an old razor
the man who had once been young and
said to have genius; but
that's the tragedy of the leaves,
the dead ferns, the dead plants;
and I walked into a dark hall
where the landlady stood
execrating and final,
sending me to hell,
waving her fat, sweaty arms
and screaming
screaming for rent
because the world has failed us
both.

My favorite Bukowski Poem.

THE MONSTER ENGINE - What if a kid's imagination....was better represented?
Topic: Arts 2:37 pm EST, Mar 19, 2006

This guy really is good at what he does. Kid's draw pictures of their 'monsters' and super-heros, and he takes those pictures, and paints them realistically, all the while leaving the basic lines and scope of the drawings.

Muhammad Cartoon for the Cartoon War
Topic: Arts 7:38 am EST, Feb 23, 2006

terratogen enters the fray....

I had to make one. How can I grow old as an artist and have people ask "What did you do during the Cartoon War?" and have nothing to show for it except a thumb up my ass. How many calls to arms will artists get in a lifetime? Artists should have a duty to make their own personal Muhammad Cartoon! Causing fear is how terror extremist groups gauge if they are winning or not. The world needs to stop being afraid of these idiots and paint them up like clowns with guns. Any group which cannot respect another world view deserves to look stupid. They need to start taking themselves much less seriously. Remember The Guru Maharaj ji ? He ripped off his followers for decades and promised to levitate the Houston Astro Dome with "Green Energy"(where was this bastard during Katrina???). I understand that people like to believe in their magic little spiritual worlds, to get the rush you get when you feel self important for no good reason at all. And everyone should have every right to do so. However, not acknowledging fundamentals of reality makes you look like an idiot to people who see things differently. Do you think some people are stupid? So do I! It's not about morality, right or wrong, or any self-righteous platform... It's about TRUTH. If you want yours to Dominate someone else's, those people are going to look at you either like a big fat DUMMY or a God (as if you have to ask which you might look like!). Getting irate, belligerent, and violent doesn't change the fact that some people are not interested in your Kool-Aid! This goes for you neo-right-wing-jesus juice slurping-fascist-christians as well. If your spirituality is not a PERSONAL experience... There is a large chunk of the world who considers you an ASSHOLE and your way of life ANNOYING! If you don't like having your bible-bubble burst, then SHUT the fuck up and it's a non-issue! When you open the panel for discussion, you will learn that "religion" does not equal "reality" and you will deserve it.

T-Shirts and other merchandise of my cartoon are available HERE. I think that the fact that I made one when there are Fatwas going around prooves that my balls are big enough to warrant your support.

One of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the world, Hong Kong has an overall density of nearly 6,700 people per square kilometer. The majority of its citizens live in flats in high-rise buildings. In Architecture of Density, Wolf investigates these vibrant city blocks, finding a mesmerizing abstraction in the buildings' facades.

These are amazing photographs. I wish I could go to the exhibition.

Topic: Arts 7:13 pm EDT, Sep 19, 2005

The other day I had a chance to flip through a friend's copy of Kurt Vonnegut's new book. Its one of those rare volumes that you can flip to just about any page and find at least one great truth present that makes you laugh out loud.

Its clearly targeted to a younger crowd. This is a perfect book to give to a teenager. MemeStreams user Opheria put together this selection of quotes:

“I think that novels that leave out technology misrepresent life as badly as Victorians misrepresent life by leaving out sex.”

“One of the most impressive ways to tell your war story is to refuse to tell it.”

“If you want to really hurt your parents, and you don’t have the nerve to be gay, the least you can do is go into the arts.”

“I don’t know about you, but I practice a disorganized religion. We call ourselves ‘Our Lady of Perpetual Astonishment.’”

“The last thing I ever wanted was to be alive when the three most powerful people on the whole planet would be named Bush, Dick and Colon.”

“We are all addicts of fossil fuels in a state of denial. And like so many addicts about to face cold turkey, our leaders are now committing violent crimes to get what little is left of what we’re hooked on.”

“We are here on Earth to fart around. Don’t let anybody tell you any different.”

“Bill Gates says, ‘Wait till you can see what your computer can become.’ But it is you who should be doing the becoming, not the damn fool computer.”

“The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.”

“…I don’t think people give a damn whether the planet goes on or not. It seems to me as if everyone is living as members of Alcoholics Anonymous do, day by day.”

“…do you know why I think George W. Bush is so pissed off at Arabs? They brought us Algebra.”

“If you actually are an educated, thinking person, you will not be welcome in Washington, D.C.”

“Life is no way to treat an animal, not even a mouse.”

“Our President is a Christian? So was Adolf Hitler.”

“Doesn’t anything socialistic make you want to throw up? Like great public schools or health insurance for all?”
“I have one reality show that would make your hair stand on end: C-Students from Yale.”

“Only nut cases want to be president. This was true even in high school. Only clearly disturbed people ran for class president.”

“What is it, what can it possibly be about blow jobs and golf?”

“…it is time we thanked God that we are in a country where even the poor people are overweight. But the Bush diet could change that.”

“The good Earth - we could have saved it, but we were too damn cheap and lazy.”

“Rules only take us so far, even good rules.”

LIVE 8 – The Long Walk to Justice
Topic: Arts 8:11 am EDT, Jul  3, 2005

Thank you shannon for giving passes to the show in philly. It rocked. I particularly enjoyed the JayZ + Linkin Park show. Not that I like JayZ or Linkin Park particularly... it was just the specticle.

Other bits of note:

* Sarah McLachlan did an extremely moving set, but when does she not?

* Natalie Portman had a ultra short buzz cut.

* As much as I didn't want to admit it Dave Matthews puts on a pretty good show.

* Black Eyed Peas rocked it.

* And the drummer from Def Leppard (still) only has one arm.

But the whole point of the shows is to raise awareness during the G8 summit about the plight of extreme poverity. Bono thinks he can cure it with music. I was pretty sceptical of the whole idea, but after seeing 1M people in philly all jamming... maybe, just maybe, it sinked in to a some. And some is a start, because the problem is pretty bad. Raising awareness for the G8 summit and creating a forum to let world leaders know that there is global support for this cause is a good start.

Listen to me... getting all soft on those damn poor people.
