Yahoo! News - Despite Bush Flip-Flops, Kerry Gets Label
Topic: Current Events 10:56 am EDT, Sep 23, 2004

] One of this year's candidates for president, to hear his
] opposition tell it, has a long history of policy
] reversals and rhetorical about-faces -- a zigzag trail
] that proves his willingness to massage positions and even
] switch sides when politically convenient.
]
] The flip-flopper, Democrats say, is President Bush.
] Over the past four years, he abandoned
] positions on issues such as how to regulate air pollution
] or whether states should be allowed to sanction same-sex
] marriage. He changed his mind about the merits of
] creating the Homeland Security Department, and made a
] major exception to his stance on free trade by agreeing
] to tariffs on steel. After resisting, the president
] yielded to pressure in supporting an independent
] commission to study policy failures preceding the Sept.
] 11, 2001, attacks. Bush did the same with questions about
] whether he would allow his national security adviser to
] testify, or whether he would answer commissioners'
] questions for only an hour, or for as long they needed.

eBay item 3837676332 (Ends Sep-12-04 11:50:06 PDT) - Jean Pierre Le'pine pen from Ex-Wife
Topic: Society 9:38 am EDT, Sep 23, 2004

] I received this stupid pen on my birthday years ago from
] my ex-wife, and even before I divorced her flabby body, I
] hated the pen. I have no idea why she bought me this
] piece of crap. Sure, it writes fine and could "seem"
] kind of cool, but I hate it. The color is ugly, it
] barely fits in my banana sized hands, and it comes with
] some weird carrying case. King Kong could barely write
] with it. Every time I open up my drawer and see this
] waste of space, I am reminded that I used to be married
] to that skank who gave me a stupid pen for my birthday.
] It's not like I collect pens or anything, or even take
] time to write stuff down. I use a computer to write.
] OK, call me different, but even if I did like or use
] pens, this is not the one I would have spent money on. I
] have no idea how much she paid for it, but I can
] guarantee you it was my money she used to buy it. She
] could barely hold down a job, let alone cook for herself.
] This dismal lazy slug sat on the couch for entertainment
] and watched old movies all day.

GOP Unites Behind DeLay After 3 Aides Are Charged (washingtonpost.com)
Topic: Current Events 9:30 am EDT, Sep 23, 2004

] House Republicans rallied around Majority Leader Tom
] DeLay (Tex.) yesterday, but they could not prevent news
] of Tuesday's indictments of three of his political
] associates from dampening a GOP celebration marking
] nearly 10 years of House control.
]
] Republican leaders and back-benchers defended DeLay,
] saying a Texas grand jury's action this week has not
] shaken their confidence in the 10-term lawmaker. The
] panel indicted three of DeLay's political associates on
] charges of illegally collecting corporate donations and
] funneling them to Texas legislative races.

LA Weekly: News: The Outing [of an Anti-Gay Legislator]
Topic: Current Events 9:16 am EDT, Sep 23, 2004

The latest target of a Capitol Hill outing campaign — designed to expose closeted homosexual Republicans who oppose civil rights for gay people — is San Gabriel Valley Congressman David Dreier.

I have always taken the view that outing a gay person should be approached with caution, and that in doing so one should strictly adhere to the Barney Frank Rule. As articulated by the openly gay Massachusetts congressman during another anti-gay GOP witch-hunt over a decade ago, when Frank threatened to out a number of gay-baiting Republican fellow congressmen, the rule insists that outing is only acceptable when a person uses their power or notoriety to hurt gay people.

Dreier clearly meets that standard, for his voting record is strewn with anti-gay positions. To cite just a few: He voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would have banned discrimination against gay people in hiring; voted for the gay-bashing Defense of Marriage Act; voted for banning adoption by gay and lesbian couples in the District of Columbia (3,000 miles away from Dreier’s district); voted to allow federally funded charities to discriminate against gays in employment, even where local laws prohibit such bias; and voted against the Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Bush 1 Terrorists 0: Cat Stevens Banned From America
Topic: Current Events 11:35 am EDT, Sep 22, 2004

] A London-to-Washington flight was diverted to Maine when
] it was discovered that passenger Yusuf Islam --
] formerly known as singer Cat Stevens -- was on a
] government watch list and barred from entering the
] country.
]
] United Airlines Flight 919 was en route to Dulles
] International Airport when the match was made Tuesday
] between a passenger and a name on the watch list, said
] Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation
] Security Administration.
]
] The plane was met by federal agents at Maine's Bangor
] International Airport around 3 p.m., Melendez said.
]
] Homeland Security Department spokesman Dennis Murphy
] identified the passenger as Islam. "He was interviewed
] and denied admission to the United States on national
] security grounds," Murphy said.

That rumble you hear is the crumbling resolve of Al-Qaeda.
