The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine

Abstract

In this paper, we present Google, a prototype of a large-scale search engine which makes heavy use of the structure present in hypertext.

Brin and Page's original paper about Google while grad students at Stanford. Good reference for understanding how spiders/crawlers index, how you can search massive amounts of data efficently, etc.

Link spammers are the sux.

Looks like a link-farming site. A few 'articles' that regurgitate obvious facts, and a bunch of advertising. What is this?! :P

That's because essmeier is a piece of shit link spammer. Memestreams has implemented measures so the Google bot doesn't follow his links, or anyone's links who doesn't have a "good" reputation (ie their memes are read/recommended by others). Link spamming Memestreams does nothing for him now.

Memestreams is constantly improving. Personally I am working on several security issues with the site, and plan to move to enhancing the Memebox. Decius and I have talked in the past about a kind of killfill for Memestreams, where you simply wouldn't see assholes like essmeier. Regardless of whether he ultimately decides to do this, there are 3 simple ways you can get rid of his posts now:

-Don't read anything he posts if you see it.

-Meme nteresting articles, that people will read and thus are placed on the front page. Link spam only gets to the front page when there aren't any more popular stories to display.

-Get more legitimate users for Mememstreams. The more users we have, the more data Memestreams' presentation and recommendation algorithms have to work with. Shit like essmeier will sink to the bottom and you will not see their posts.

Some bad shit on the Connector today. Luckily Georgia Navigator (best, traffic reports, ever) now has RSS feeds about traffic incidents.

*I* am the ultimate driving machine
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:08 am EDT, Jun 22, 2005

This just annoys me: BMW. The Ultimate Driving Machine.

No its not! It doesn't drive me anywhere. *I* drive me anywhere. I am the ultimate driving machine.

The day I can hop in a BMW and say "Take me to the grocery store," and the car speaks wirelessly to my fridge to find out what I need, does a map quest to find the closest store with the best prices on what I need, accounts for traffic, and drives itself to the store, then, and only then, will it be the ultimate driving machine.

Interview with Marcus Ranum

I don't think that the standards committees underestimate security threats; I just think they're too busy doing things that are more important to them -- like holding meetings and writing minutes

Awesome interview. The gist of it is:
-Security sucks because CTO's don't understand proper security, or fail to implement policies because of office politics

-The thumb is *up* the ass. Network security issues have largely been understood since the late 80s. We keep dicking around ever reinventing the encrypted tunnel instead of working on complex and interesting problems.

-IETF and other bodies are so packed with commerical stoogies that they are being ineffective.

-Security is a design, not an add-on. It must exist on all levels. Network security is pointless without host security. Security cannot exist only in layers 3 and 4. It must include the application!

-The popularity of Computers and the Internet is what's killing the industry. Too many uneducated people use it, so most companies are too busy selling them stuff to improving the quality/security of their products. (IE Microsoft's user friendly gui instead of controlled execution of code).

Scientists see women's brains switch off during sex | The Register
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:47 am EDT, Jun 20, 2005

A group of researchers at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands (where else?) scanned the brains of 13 women and 11 men as they were brought to orgasm by their partners. The resulting brain images were compared to images the subjects' brains while at rest.

Can you imagine writing this research proposal? The subjects will then be brought to climax using a variety of simulating agents, both biological and mechanical...

Oh course the best part is:

There was no mention of whether the results may have been affected by the fact the couples were being watched by a bunch of geeks in white coats while at least one partner had their head connected to a machine that goes bing.

Gov. Bush wants probe of Schiavo collapse
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:53 pm EDT, Jun 17, 2005

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- Gov. Jeb Bush asked a prosecutor Friday to investigate why Terri Schiavo collapsed 15 years ago, calling into question how long it took her husband to call 911 after he found her.

In a letter faxed to Pinellas-Pasco County State Attorney Bernie McCabe, Bush said Michael Schiavo testified in a 1992 medical malpractice trial that he found his wife collapsed at 5 a.m., and he said in a 2003 television interview that he found her about 4:30 a.m. He called 911 at 5:40 a.m.

"Between 40 and 70 minutes elapsed before the call was made, and I am aware of no explanation for the delay," Bush wrote. "In light of this new information, I urge you to take a fresh look at this case without any preconceptions as to the outcome."

Instead of playing policeman, maybe Gov Bush could spend his time reading his state's constitution, understand seperation of powers, and then stopping fucking pandering to the religious right. Fucking jackass
