It seems like only days ago that Abercrombie & Fitch was telling us not to read too much into its decision to yank its racy quarterly from its shops. On Monday, A&F promised the "magalog" would be back in January with its usual quotient of "butts and partial nudity." But by this Wednesday, after weeks of controversy over its "2003 Christmas Field Guide", the retailer announced it was discontinuing the quarterly altogether. "Some corporations dump toxic chemicals into our rivers, others spit poisonous toxins into the air. Then there's Abercrombie and Fitch." In response to "bad" speech, more speech leads to self censorship, on the basis of financial self interest. Democracy meets capitalism at its finest. |
