MTV.com - News -Legendary Pixies To Reunite For Tour, Album by Decius at 7:59 am EDT, Sep 11, 2003 |
] In April, the legendary Pixies will reunite for the first ] time in over a decade. The notoriously quarrelsome ] quartet have buried the hatchet, clearing the way for all ] four original members to hop onstage together for a world ] tour, according to a spokesperson for the band. Part of me doesn't want to recommend this. 4ad is an RIAA label. We'll see, in April, if I really want to give these people money. I'm already having misgivings about having bought RadioHead tickets.... |

I saw Frank Black twice last year, at both shows he did several Pixies songs. All totally awesome.. Better then any past bootlegs I've heard. Gouge Away, Wave of Mutilation, etc.. All the classics. Black is ready for it.. ] i saw "the breeders" last year, and while worth it, it wasn't ] exactly like seeing the breeders if you know what i mean. Argh.. I will never understand it. Whenever the Pixies come up, the first band mentioned after is The Breeders. Rock n' Roll dies a little more every time this happens. I'd be way more worried about Joey Santiago not showing up to a Pixies reunion then Deal.. You see, the Breeders seemed to get a lot of attention, because they have two Kim Deal's, errr, the Deal twins.. Whereas, Frank Black, the guy who wrote and sang, almost all the Pixies songs, is a big fat bald white guy. FB has been producing very solid material, non-stop, since the Pixies broke up.. The Breeders is _not_ where the lions share of the song writing talent in that band went. There have been what? Two or Three Breeders albums? As compared to 10+ out of Black.. Hell, he has released 3 full length albums of material in the past _YEAR_. Way more prolific. This is going to be good.. I'm excited about this. You can be all anti-RIAA, and thats cool. I'm down with that too.. I have often cited the lack of success FB has received as reason to destroy the whole damn system. I see this is as a win for my side. The Pixies are back. Hooray! |

I would agree that Santiago is more likely the missing link, but I would disagree with your assesment of song writing chops. For one, Kim heavily influenced Frank's writing. You can definitely tell whenever you listen to a Breeders song compared to FB solo effort. But the more interesting x-factor here is who has cleaned up their heroin addictions? The Deal's have. A big unknown on Joey. FB definitely HASN'T! should be a good show one way or another. |

I'm saying that every time the Pixies are mentioned, the first band mentioned afterwards is the Breeders, and Rock n' Roll dies a little more. Deal defintally had an effect on Black's song writing.. No doubt. I think the best test, is to take one of the later Pixies albums like Tromp le Monde or Bossanova, then stack it next to the first breeders album and FB's Teenager of the Year.. Teenager being the FB solo album that Santiago did some work on.. And all of them being recording within the same rough period of time. I've always though in that context, you can here what came from where pretty easily.. All the things _I_ like in the Pixies song writing went over to the FB side.. My favorite Pixies songs like ones like Gouge Away, Velouria, Letter to Memphis, The Happening, etc.. Not Gigantic and Into the White.. Most of Deal's influence I hear coming in songs like that, and in the general rhythms present in Pixies tunes.. However the song writing things I like about the Pixies were may more present in songs like Fazar Eyes, Calistan, Two Reelers, Old Mulholland, etc.. The only places in some of the FB solo stuff I've felt some of the Pixies/Deal vibe cross thru have been tracks like White Noise Maker, and only a little. Listen to the Breeders, and its dripping with it. You can kinda hear what came from where.. Um.. As for the heroin thing.. Where are you getting your intel? I've been under the impression that was a done issue.. Didn't that all come to a head when Kim's sister got arrested or ODd at Lollapoloza or something? Anyway, FB hasn't been setting off my Lou Reed alarms, so qualify the all-caps "hasen't".. I'm interested.. |

Well, the reason i mentioned the Breeders is less because of the pixies tie in than because they're the most recent "band i used to like and never saw in their prime, but OH SWEET THEY'RE BACK ON TOUR" experience i've had (not that there are many). I certainly think the pixies are more relevant than the breeders, but both were pretty influential, and informed my development as a young music lover. ] FB has been producing very solid material, non-stop, since the ] Pixies broke up.. The Breeders is _not_ where the lions share ] of the song writing talent in that band went. This is undoubtedly true. I can't say i've listened to much of his recent stuff, though i know he's been making quite a lot. Every so often i try it out on the sample station in the record store and quickly remember that there are already a few records on the list in my wallet that i've been meaning to buy. Frank Black just never makes it up the list. ] This is going to be good.. I certainly *hope* so... i was just being cynical really. Maybe frank can pull it off... To be 100% honest, my going to see this show will depend largely on how much tickets cost. I rarely spend more than 10 bucks for a show these days, unless it's really special, which this certainly would qualify as. But if they roll through and expect 25 or 30 bucks for a ticket, well, sorry, i can buy 3 or 4 records at the used shop for that and get a lot more from it. |

Its weird, his first three solo albums are the only ones that seem to get attention, but the first and third are kinda weak, in comparison with some of the later stuff. Aside from Teenager of the Year, I don't think Black really got his band's lineup right until Rich Gilbert wound up in the band. Teenager being the only studio done one.. The vast majority of Black's albums were recorded live to 2track. I'm pretty sure _all_ the Catholics albums were recorded live to 2track.. Yes! I have been waiting for a Pixies reunion for soooo long.. Frank Black said in an interview a few months ago that the idea was being considered.. Looks like its happening. |
